Ruth Simmons admits she used to be a nuisance to her teachers when she was a schoolgirl. Now, as president of Brown University, she is among the top educators in the world. She is also the first African-American woman to head an ivy league school.

Donna Brazil ROCKS! I absolutely LOVE her!

As a teacher, I've seen thousands of students like her. This goes to show that teachers cannot give upon any child. Even when we think, they are a nuisance, they oftentimes see and hear what they are being taught, they may just not show any interest at that t=aprticular time.

Wow! The Interview with Dr. Simmons was so inspiring and without prejudice.

Good for Ruth Simmons, only in the greatest country on earth is the sky the limit. She is proof of hard work and dedication and not her race. Why must the media label some people by their race as though that had anything to do with it." I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." This famous quote by Martin Luther King is familiar to many of us in this country. By the way I am' white".
Martin Luther King must have had envisioned a situation like this where character is the factor not color. Lets quit noting peoples color, we all have eyes.

Obama has said on many occasions that one of the main ways he will pay for health care reform is by taking 680 billion dollar out 0f medicare and medicaid, then say they are not going to ration care. How dumb due they think we are

Nothing wrong with a black dean as long as they are the most qualified! As long as color was not a consideration and experience and qualifications were!

Prescott Bush   August 11th, 2009 10:09 pm ET

john kavanaugh;

You went to college?
You should ask for your money back?
I read your comment and it is stupid.
I guess you may look dumb but you really just stupid (dim-witted).

[...] most powerful corporations. Currently she serves as the 18th president of Brown University. Her story is truly that of the American dream. The irony that a woman raised in the segregated south by parents with no formal education would [...]

Good job! I agree with teacher on not giving up on kids. Kids will be kids. A more concentrated education system would get the job done.

Congrats to her but Brown is the Ivy League school you go to when all other Ivy league schools don't want you. NYC and Berkeley have more prestige...just saying!

Marion   August 14th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

Uh, Brown has a lower acceptance rate than NYU and Berkeley. It is just as prestigious as the other Ivies and affords its students greater academic freedom. Just saying.

EthanK   August 14th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

Actually Brown is preferred over Columbia, uPenn, Dartmouth, and Cornell, and it is way more prestigious than NYU and Berkeley.
