Two Obama administration officials tell CNN a maximum security prison 150 miles west of Chicago is the top contender to house some detainees from the federal facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A GOP representative says locating detainees in Illinois would make that state a terrorist target.

What do you think? Post your comments below. We may use some of them this morning in the CNN Newsroom.

Finally our Government is working to move the Country forward..

jeane   November 15th, 2009 6:27 am ET

Why would one who wants to fight everybody and go to war around the world, capture people and then be SCARED /CHICKEN. If we can send our troops to fight so brilliantly and ask them to sacrafice so much then I'm sure we can put them in our legal prisons and guard them and our communities. Maybe those who support the war only support it if it does not affect them. Shame shame it should affect us all.

We in Illinois are not afraid of terrorist prisoners–bring them here. The alleged Gitmo terrorists should be tried in this country. The 9-11 conspirators are charged with attacking us–not Cuba. Americans are not afraid of terrorists, never have been, never will be. We held thousands of prisoners of war across the country in WWI and WWII. What are the Republicans afraid of - justice?

Tom Jones   November 15th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

Stupid Idea, It should not even be considered. Why put everyone in Illinois in danger. That would make Illinois, the people of Illinois men women and children a target of terror. Keep the terrorists where they are.
Do not put the children of Illinois in danger for an Obama pet project.

Mona   November 16th, 2009 9:19 am ET

Our prison system is the best. What are were afraid of? Murderers, rapists, violent ang members.....Let's see the terrorists manage to live day to day with them.

Seriously. This is a great time to show the world that we are a country of law and order. The terrorist spew out falsehoods about our way of government and our culture. This public forum that they will be tried in will allow the ones accused answer to the charges but more imporant this will allow our country–The prosecution to show there evidence to the world. I am confident Eric Holder has enough evidence to ensure that justice will prevail.

Well, Obama couldn't get the o;ympics to Chicago so now it will be the Gitmo terrorists. One way or another money will flow into Illinois.
Maybe if all you jounalists on CNN would start asking the right questions instead of thinking that you are rock stars and kissing each others behind after every report we would learn the real truth about what is going on. I would switch to Fox, but they overtalk each other so much it drives me crazy

I think the USA has suffered enough since 9/11! Please do not bring these folks back to NYC and bring aymore hurt on them (citizens of NYC and USA). Since the Fort Hood shootings that may be related to some cause I think the United States Government needs to take a serious look at the the military and the stress it has imposed upon them sine 9/11. Please do not bring these terroists back to the USA!

I would prefer we bring the Gitmo Detainees in to the USA because I am tired of this country spending millions on each person per year to another country. Unless Illinois has a very isolated area whereby it would be a death sentence if they break out due to the topography, I would recommend we re-open Alcatraz Island in San Francisco bay.

Why? Because that is a great white shark infested bay due to the sea lions. Therefore, if they are even able to break out, and not drown or freeze in the frigid waters, they would be eaten. Its a perfect setting. No possible escape.

ROGER JOHNSON   November 18th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

try them in a military tribunal and after they are found guilty show some respect for the families excute them! WHY are we so slow in excuting them heathans. LET me tell you i was just a young boy growing up next to a big AIR FORCE BASE IN NORTH DAKOTA and every day you could look up in the sky and see our BIG BOMBERS in formation and seeing them and the sound of the engins up in the clear sky on their way to war left a big impression on this small boy and made me so proud! WE demand justice now and do it quick instead of a long stupid drug out trail. THEY are war criminals and do not deserve a trial!! we need to quit apologizing for being AMERICANS.I am fed up with weak leaders who take too long to make war decisions while our young men and women are cut down in our own back yard like animals by some wackoo muslim major who used the our system to kill our presious people !! WE NEED A HARRY TRUMAN AND GEN McCARTHER MIND SET that we lost in vietnam to rekindle the passion of AMERICA AND TAKE THE FIGHT TO THIER FRONT DOOR IN WHATEVER MEANS IT TAKES ,THIS IS THE ONLY THING THEY UNDERSTAND AND SEND THEM STRAIGHT TO THEIR ALLAH-GOD!!!!!!

ROGER JOHNSON   November 18th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

Mrs. Eileen G. Curras widow to Hernandez (WWII)   November 19th, 2009 9:46 am ET

I think that the experts are her in the United States not Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. How can the state, could become a terrorist target? I believe that the GOP representative is using a scare tactics to push his agenda to America. We need to stop this scare tactics to push for a political agenda.

MR.AL   November 19th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

Gitmo detainees why should Americans pay to keep these people in the United States? The "alternative" rehab ALCATRAZ nobody ever escaped from Alcatraz and lived! A coat of paint and some TLC would be good enough, plus it would create needed jobs. Conservatives want to house them on American soil? If they try to escape from ALCATRAZ they would become "SHARK FOOD". i think that is a better Idea!!!!!!!!!

Interesting discussions on CNN regarding Fort Hood, like 9/11 it seems there is a lot of evidence that officials new something was about to happen, but sinisterly 'somehow' "missed" the clues. This guy at Fort Hood was clearly a psychological ticking time bomb, and his going off allows the military and the far right to blame 'political correctness' over-sensitivity. How convenient for the far right military agenda. Red Alert, battle-stations everyone.

The truth is however that everyone around this guy should have been sensitive to the fact that he was psychologically unstable, and he should have received help. That's the type of understanding that American needs to develop, if it wants to stop isolating itself from the rest of the world. But the military and national security strategists who were tracking this man, and their far right supporters want to put an end to the type of awareness and sensitivity that really could have prevented this tragedy, and it seems allowed this man to 'melt down'. Its obvious now what is wrong with America, but does the general American public have the courage to rise above its knee jerk reactionism.

Good work cnn for having an open discussion which allowed this sinister undercurrent in the established neo-conservative elements of American government and military to be put into focus by those with the courage to look.

HISTORY LESSON

June 13, 1942, four men landed on a beach on Long Island, New York, from a German submarine. Dressed in civilian clothes they brought ashore enough explosives, primers, and incendiaries to support an expected two-year career in the sabotage of American defense-related production.

The purpose of the invasion was to strike a major blow for Germany by bringing the violence of war to our home ground through destruction of America's ability to manufacture vital equipment and supplies and to strike fear into the American civilian population, and diminish the resolve of the United States to overcome our enemies.

By June 27, 1942, all saboteurs had been arrested without having accomplished one act of destruction. Tried before a Military Commission, they were found guilty. One was sentenced to life imprisonment, another to thirty years, and six received the death penalty, which was carried out within a few days.
