Back then, NO DNA testing was available. It is now... Just do the retest - if it's NOT his, then someone else had to be there. End of story. Plus, they['d have a DNA profile they can run against everyone on file. Maybe they'd get a match...

In addition to DNA testing being unheard of at the time, the MPs on the scene were all over the house, and didn't preserve the crime scene. Evidence was lost and mishandled, chain-of-command fell apart, the list goes on and on...
