Sheriff says A&E not welcome in his county

CNN's Brooke Baldwin talks to a Georgia sheriff who told A&E the network's video crews are not welcome in his county. Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller says A&E should not punish Phil Robertson of "Duck Dynasty" for his belief in the bible. Sheriff Miller feels the network should let Robertson express his "Christian values".

The sheriff is a silly man. All this over some very weird family in Louisiana? I guess I dont' get it, but I have never watched the show and never will.

What an odd thing for a sheriff to say...does he understand that that Phil man can speak till he's blue in the face under our govt. for our freedom of speech but private business does not allow you to speak disparagingly against people (well down right disgustingly against people) when you are representing that said company?

I don't watch the show but I do believe that Phil Robertson was stating his personal beliefs in the bible. He was taught this as a child and still believes in these teachings. We do have freedom of religion and speech. From what was reported he never expressed his views in the TV show. If the sheriff believes in the same bible that Phil does he should stand up for his freedom of religion also.

Thank you for taking a stance for freedom of speech. I do believe that the Bible is Gods inspired words and that Phil had every right and obligation as a Christian to answer the questions asked of him with honesty and integrity. Thank you and Phil for standing firm, even when there is nothing to gain except eternity.

I agree with our sheriff, united we stand. And he is standing with his fellow man against a corrupt system that's trying to take God out of everything.
I'm tried of seeing People who aren't politically correct get slammed for expressing their beliefs. Everyone will get offended at some point, so we shouldn't have to walk on eggshell worried about it. freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of the People, that apparently can't tell we are all being oppressed.

As someone else said, it's not his freedom of speech that was attacked. A&E is watching out did itself on a business front. It's surprising how surprised they are at what he said, though, knowing his stance beforehand. But, I'm from this Georgia county and this means we'll be losing around $14 million, plus jobs. A&E films a lot here. We could definitely use the money.

It’s obvious that there are many people who don’t want to have anything to with Gay people. They reject their Gay family members, steer clear of their Gay co-workers, and don’t count Gay people among their friends. They feel that Gay Americans are second-class citizens, unworthy of any legal protection whatsoever. And it seems like these people have been looking for someone to rally around. And THIS is the best they can do?

Seems A&E should be required to hire a private security detail for a private, for profit business venture regardless of location. It would be horrible if a Douglas County citizen had an emergency call and response was delayed because officers were acting as security guards for A&E.

As a life long resident of Douglas County Georgia, I (and most people I know) welcome A&E and any other entertainment group to Douglas County, GA. – They do not need Sheriff Miller's help or cooperation to do business here. We have a film commission that is working hard to bring the entertainment business to our county. Our doors are open to the world. We will leave the porch light on! Free speech is a right, but capitalism rules!

Seems a lot of people here don't understand what Freedom of Speech means. Let me break it down.

Freedom of Speech – You have the Freedom to say what you want so long as it doesn't violate the law or another persons rights. The government cannot lawfully censor you under freedom of speech.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT YOU SAY. You have the RIGHT to say it, but other people and private businesses (like A & E) have the same right to not offer you business, fire you for how you reflect on the company, and comment back.

It is not a get out of jail free card for what you say. If you want proof of this, go some place with a lot of a certain minority and start giving racial epithets to them. Then, when they get mad, say "Freedom of Speech" and watch how they don't just shrug and go oh well I guess we have to endure this!

He spoke negatively in a public space and is getting the repercussions, so why should we now lose possible millions of dollars in revenue we could be making from a big network filming in our County? It's not going to effect THEIR bottom line, it's going to effect OURS. This is just plain silly.

    December 24, 2013 at 12:11 pm |
  22. Monica

I don't think Sheriff Miller banned A&E from all of Douglas County. They have filmed a few episodes of "Beyond Scared Straight" at the Douglas County Jail, and he said that A&E was no longer welcome to do that. He didn't say that the network couldn't come to Douglas County.

What nobody here seems to be taking into account is that, contract or not, the remainder of the duck dynasty family is going to stand behind Phil. That being said, it's a moot point that this Sheriff has decided to not allow A&E into his county. While I have always been one to defend the rights of every citizen in this country, I do not personally feel that A&E or anybody has a right to condemn somebody for expressing their opinion. I do not have a problem with people taking offense to it, I personally take offense to it, but that shouldn't mean that A&E should suspend Phil and hence prevent a show which will still attract millions of viewers from continuing. The be all end all here is, no Phil no Duck Dynasty, and that should be the point of view that should be looked at in this instance, especially by those of you claiming that capitalism is so important.

This sheriff will be reported to POST(Peace Officers Standards and Training), the Law Enforcement Professional conduct review organization and most likely will be in serious trouble for his actions. You can be upset, but you can not force a religious based personal decision on anyone, it is illegal. That is what this 'sheriff' is attempting to do. Hopefully A&E will not have to deal with him in the future and can use State Police services. It is not 1960 any more.

First, this is not a Free Speech issue. Nothing has or will stop him from saying whatever he wants. The Constitution doesn't guarantee us a TV show. And the irony in a Georgia Sheriff agreeing that blacks had no problem with Jim Crow laws or the fear of being lynched is staggering. And is it OK for Hobby Lobby to prohibit their employees from getting birth control while A&E can't exert control over what their employee says?

And these guys forgot to do one big thing. Erase their prior life from the Internet. These "good ol' boys" only became "good ol' boys for a TV show. They pretty much lived the life of rich kids before the show. They're laughing all the way to the bank.

In addition to his comments about gay people, Phil also said that black people LOVED Jim Crow and didn't want civil rights legislation

He has also said "You gotta marry these girls when they're 15 or 16". As the LOWEST age of consent in the US is 16 (17 in Louisiana), Phil was advocating statutory rape and/or borderline pedophilia. Nice hero you people have!

Everyone I know including myself have been and continue to boycott A&E for their decisions based on stupidity on this issue and those in the past. A&E thinks they can "wave their magic wand", be above us all and make decisions based on their stupidity. A&E, announce to the public the mistake that was made in your decision or more and more people will tune you out for good.

I wonder what other "laws" the sheriff has created and chooses to selectively enforce?
These are the kinds of stunts that give law enforcement a bad name.
Let me assure you that most of the law enforcement community is interested in serving and protecting without making hate filled comments that only serve to divide communities and create unrest.

You don't have constitutional protection or a Bill of Rights in the workplace. You check your liberty out when you clock in. A&E was following their policy to sanction an employee for workplace ethics violations, totally within their rights as an employer here in America. Mr. Robertson also has the right to speak out about his beliefs, right, wrong or otherwise. I'll even defend his right to do so, even if I think he's wrong (which I do vehemently do). He just can't do it on A&E's time or dime, and A&E has made sure he knows it. Pretty much a non-story puffed up by the intolerant demanding tolerance again. Religion is insanity folks, stop believing in magic and get some real education.

I tried watching that show once. I couldn't seem to get my iq to a low enough level to sit through it for any length of time.

As to A&E's decision, it's their business and their decision to make, not yours or mine. Whether or not anyone agrees with their decision is irrelevant. Anyone and everyone is more than free to switch the channel or remain on it.

As for the mantra [and the link] America was founded on Christian values, horse puckey. We separated from England due to taxation without representation. Since everyone owned a gun or three and had already proven they had zero problems with using them, the Founders made the wise decision to not p1$$ them off even more when our original laws were written.

Re: Christianity overall, that's fine with me if that's what someone wishes to follow and believe in, but it does cause a bit of a conundrum for yourselves when you defend Christianity, especially when you condemn others for not believing the same way you do.

Case in point, many of you are using the Bible as a reason to justify your dislike/hatred of gay people and ignoring the passages that dictate you leave the judgment to the higher authority.

There was a post in here somewhere about history. Cool. In the 4th century Emperor Constantine ordered the Bible to be rewritten,,, and it was. Books were removed and passages were rewritten or removed. King James ordered the Bible be rewritten once more so it would give him wiggle room to be able to do certain thigns he felt he needed to do. So now we have the King James version of an already manipulated Bible.

Christians aren't even following the word of "their god". They're following what Emperor Constantine and King James wanted them to follow.

One might as well watch and memorize all the lines from the Star Wars episodes and follow The Force.

You guessed it by now, I'm an Atheist. The Big Bang Theory actually makes sense and I don't have to follow some book that evidently would render me incapable of living hate free.

Its not JUST that he spoke his religious beliefs. Its not that simple and black and white. He also showed his hatred to an entire group of people. Using the bible card is just another way of covering up that he hates. Period. There are people who believe the bible and there are those who dont. Until someone can prove the Bible is real and the truth, then its all based on faith so it cant be taken literally unless you show proof it is real.

AMERICA is a BACKWARD country. As evidenced by the millions and millions of people coming out to defend some guy with a long beard that does something with ducks. Number one no one is silencing Phil Robertson ability to say homophobic and racist things, but saying those things does not shelter you from the consequences of saying those things.

I will defend Phil Robertson and the KKK from saying whatever the hell they like, but they aren't immune from the consequences of what they say. A&E has every right to suspend or fire Phil Robertson or anyone else because their speech reflects badly on them.

To all the people saying that he was just reiterating the Bible, does the Bible also say that African-Americans were much happier living under a system that systematically discriminated and persecuted them- Segregation?

II wonder if all these "Free Speech" folks are now going to defend Martin Bashier, Bill Maher and other liberals who said things that some view as controversial, and individuals who subsequently lost their jobs. I doubt it since as stated before America is a backward nation.

And finally will all you Christians saying your persecuted and discriminated against, please SHUT THE HELL UP. You are not . Real persecution of Christians and other religious minorities occurs in Middle Eastern Countries like Iran were they are systematically denied rights. You are just a bunch crybaby's, GROW up. You think your persecuted because the country is becoming more diverse- ethnically, religiously, and racially so get over it you're not being persecuted you just cant deal with demographics in America in the 21st Century.

This is what the Bible says in Romans 1::
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
    28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
    Read John 3:16 please

Dear Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller:

A&E deciding to suspend Mr. Robertson is a private contractual civil matter, not a violation of the constitutional free speech right.

You, however, are a agent of the government. Therefore, you banning A&E from working in your county IS a violation of the constitutional rights of A&E employees. Shameful!

Being a 22 year old gay male growing up in Douglas County life has been everything but peaceful and this does not surprise me. It seems like most individuals out here can't acquire a thought process for themselves and that they are running out of minorities to hate. This is basically a Chick fil A sequel where the whole town waited hours to get a sandwich. From having issues with being bullied all through high school and nothing being done to having a DC police officer tell me he would try his best to arrest me because I looked gay; this is no shock to me.

I don't know of any law requiring government to open their buildings in order for a cable channel to film TV shows. And considering that they were filming in a jail, that was pretty nice of DCSO, even if they were getting paid. And from what I saw, he spoke to every news media outlet that asked him questions. This is A&E we're talking about.

A&E didn't like what Phil Robertson said, they suspended him. The Sheriff didn't like what they did, he no longer wants them in the jail while he is responsible for running it. I don't see where the issue is here, someone please correct me if I am missing something.

Is there sheriff? not interfering in instate commerce as A&E is headquartered in NY according to my reference. A potential violation of federal law. What gives him the right to be judge & jury in deciding who can do business in this county? He is basically guilty of the same of which he is accusing A&E of. He is wanting to punish A&E for their belief, the belief that THEIR show and network was damaged by the statements of their employee and it required corrective action.

    December 26, 2013 at 7:54 pm |
  58. Eric

Correction: should have been "Is this sheriff? not interfering in interstate commerce...."
also the article led me to believe he was trying to ban A&E from the county. posts suggest he has just banned them from the county jail. I would like to see some clarification of this.

Apparently the Sherriff missed the point about how the "star" was complete permitted to say whatever he wanted, but that his employer was free to decide if that matched the employer's message.
    .
And also apparently the Sherriff missed the part about how employers can indeed practice limiting of speech by employees, but that government officials, such as the Sherriff, cannot limit in any way the free speech activities of employers or employees alike. That is government censorship.
    .
So, basically, only the Sherriff here is in the wrong. The "star" exercised his rights without interference, the employer exercised its rights as an employer to control its image, and the viewers and no viewers all exercised their rights to watch or not watch the show or the channel.
    .
Sherriff – back to legal training. You have overstepped.

This is not a First Amendment issue. The Constitution protects you from the government. A&E also is entitled to Freedom of Expression (speech) under the Constitution. As a business, they make a decision. If you don't like that decision, you are free to change channels. In the mean time, Robertson is not in jail, not being prosecuted by the government for his words. If FOX wants to pick him up, and his supporters want to watch, so be it. You cannot support freedom of expression for some, but not others based on whether you agree with them or not.

Sounds like another above the law thinking law dog is getting ahead of himself. He's there to serve and protect.. nobody handed over ownership of the county for him to say who is and isn't welcomed there. I'm all for Phil Robertson, but coming from a place where cops tend to think they are "above the law", this guy aggravates me.

If i were the citizens of this town id be pretty ticked off at this Sheriff thinking he is more then a public servent of the law and speaking for the county in which he is suppose to serve saying that A&E is not welcome in "his" county, really.... do you think A&E needs you more then your little county needs the revenue that is brought in with them being their, better think again Sheriff.

Sherrif Andy Taylor and Phil need to read ALL the bible, not just the parts that match their agenda. Too bad both of these guys can't understand that they are using their religion to vainly infuence others to their small minded ways. Too bad that they do not understand that taking the lords name in Vain is a sin – I think I could also run through about 20 other things that they are doing against the teaching of the bible, but those don't make the news.

The sheriff needs a reminder in what the First Amendment is. A&E doesn't have any responsibility to "let Robertson express his "Christian values"." They may *choose* to so do (and since they're not going to kill their cash cow, they probably will), but they are under no *obligation* to make themselves a platform for anyone.

Meanwhile, thanks to both Phil Robertson and the A&E execs for confirming that my decision eight years ago to do without cable was absolutely correct. A 'vast wasteland' indeed.

It is freedom of speech for Phil Robertson of "Duck Dynasty" to say what he thinks and is his personal view. Same way it is corporate freedom to hire or fire anyone. This stupid sheriff is interfering with corporate freedom. Let me guess he is a democrat.

...and not welcoming a TV network means li'l sheriff man there is doing his own share of limiting freedom of speech. I think our nation is not divided among left/right, conservative/liberal parties, I think it's divided among people who take 3 seconds to read and think before making a statement, and people who are so terrified of change, that they feel entitled to dismiss dissenting voices as "bound for hell" and "unpatriotic", blame it all on some colossal conspiracy against the few, truly good people remaining on Earth. I'd rather read, think and learn than to cower on a cave, hating everyone who isn't my clone.

This is a real problem – a sheriff does not have the authority to expell people from the county. In fact, the right of interstate migration is a constitutional right as well. While the South may not believe it, we are long passed the era that this should be occuring.

    December 31, 2013 at 2:23 pm |
  76. Eric

Freedom of speech means the government can't interfere with your speech. A&E can hire and fire whom they please; most likely there was a clause in the Duck Dynasty contract that specifically permits them to do it anyhow.

The sheriff, who is part of the government, doesn't get to decide who may or may not film in his county because he doesn't like who A&E fired.

    December 31, 2013 at 2:59 pm |
  77. Theleo

Eric you are right on the money . This is nothing more than showboating/grandstanding, whatever you want to call it. It's just that the sheriff knows that some where out there is a voter who is too goofy to realize it.Most likely thousands.

I I am shocked that any decent moral person would want to watch a ignorant redneck racist like Phil Robertson in the first place. This man claims to be a christian. He is no more a christian than the man in the moon. He does not have a clue as to what Jesus taught. He sounds more like the racist tea party members in the south than an upstanding moral person. A&E should be boycotted for allowing him to return to the show.

His belief in the Bible and "Christian" values? Which part of those talks about how men should be marrying girls who are 15 or 16? That if you wait until a woman is 20 then the only picking going on will be pockets. So apparently when he was talking about vagina's, he meant high school vagina's. I wonder what other video clip or sound bite pearl of "christian" wisdom by this hillbilly will re-surface in the weeks to come. Sure a person can say whatever he or she wants, but they also have to understand that there are consequences. Just because you use the word "christian" doesn't make you one.

He has also said "You gotta marry these girls when they're 15 or 16". As the LOWEST age of consent in the US is 16 (17 in Louisiana), Phil was advocating statutory rape and/or borderline pedophilia. Nice hero you people have!
    =================================
I've been on boards this morning where his fans have been falling all over themselves defending this old creep. Funny how statutory rape & pedophilia have become 'Christian' values to Phil's rabid followers. Will A&E give him a ride on advocating these latest 'Christian' values?

A few years ago, Daddy Duck and his ducklings were just clean-shaven multimillionaires. Then, they decided to grow out their facial hair and play the redneck shtick full out to exploit the rubes and become billionaires. Seems to have worked for them....

"Seems A&E should be required to hire a private security detail for a private, for profit business venture regardless of location. It would be horrible if a Douglas County citizen had an emergency call and response was delayed because officers were acting as security guards for A&E."
Lynn, in many places such a detail is hired and it is off-duty officers. I guess some might consider it a good thing that this sheriff would suggest that his officers do not have a right to earn that extra income if a private company is breaking no laws but has opinions that differ from his own.

It is also worth noting that when the producers asked the Robertsons to not use "in Jesus' name" or some similar expression they did not take issue. It is also worth noting that the more fuss being raised leads to higher ratings and the sheriff will be able to keep sending officers on paid details. Funny how that works.

How many times must it be said? This ISN'T and never WAS about free speech. No one censored his comments nor told him he could not make them, just as no one has told him that many of us don't think much of his suggesting that 16 year old girls are the right age to marry. He can say those things all he wants, and no one will even attempt to stop him. He is FREE to say whatever he likes.

That doesn't mean we have to agree with him, nor does it obligate us to watch his television program. In fact, having never seen the show I'm all the more certain now that I never will. No one stops me from saying that because, like him, I also enjoy Freedom of Speech. I'll live with the consequences of saying what I did...but he gets the same...and if the consequences are severe (in his eyes) then so be it. I'll bet there's a lot of stuff in the Bible that he doesn't believe in...or worse that maybe he does. Does he carefully follow the rules about how to treat his slaves? I could be wrong but I think I've seen pictures of him wearing clothing of blended fibers. Those are both big biblical no-nos.

It's a shame all you people touting "Freedom of Speech" either didn't take a Civics/Government class or slept through it.

The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech..." The clause prohibits the government from banning speech because it does not agree with the message. It has nothing to do with an employer firing an employee for making remarks that the employer doesn't agree with or are contrary to the employer's views, etc. For example, people are fired and /or denied employment for things they have posted online all the time.

This county needs a new sheriff that actually understands the law.

Well, I'm not surprised by the ignorance of all these people. This is the southern USA we're talking about, where, unfortunately, I live. First, this is not and never has been a free speech issue. Our right to freedom of speech means the GOVERNMENT cannot punish you for your beliefs. No one from the government has done anything to this throwback hick to violate his speech so freedom of speech has NEVER been violated in this case. You are not free to violate whatever rules your employer has in place. Now a days most, if not all, large companies have rules in place where you cannot disparage others in your work place. A&E decided he violated their corporate rules, and most other companies would probably agree. I challenge any of you defenders to go into your workplace and start saying how you feel about gays and their rights and see how long you keep your job or end up getting sued. If I worked for A&E, I would have found a gay person who worked on the set to sue for workplace bullying and not only would this guy be off the air, but his pockets would be a lot lighter as he would surely lose a workplace discrimination case. Secondly, considering this guy is a sheriff and should know the law, how exactly and what law would you use to keep people out of your county. This is the USA and as far as I know I can go wherever I want and this "sheriff" can't do a thing about it.

Who else does this sheriff think gets a show on A&E?

Hey sheriff, when I pass through, in the interest of free speech, I expect that you will allow me access to your departments radios so that I can broadcast my free speech. I have no problem with Phil expressing his "Christian values". However like many Christians I know, the problem was when he went beyond that and engaged in bigoted comments that have connection to the Bible. Not to mention that the media's focus on his gay comments has completely overshadowed his clearly bigoted comments about the treatment of blacks in Jim Crow South.

TheSadTruth all who agree, the point of America is firmly in this law enfocement officers grasp, freedom of speech in the first ammendment is not "some notion" as the CNN report would represent but instead is a constitutionally delineated right enumarrated by our forefathers and codified in the Bill of Rights protecting our individual freedoms. Amazing how speech is only protected when it agrees with you, how hypocritical and unpatriotically socialist of you. Good on the Sheriff, but heck why would we want a Sheriff to uphold the law of the land. It's a bought time the 99% of us stopped getting pushed around by the fringe 1% that are free to live immorally, but just want us all to accept. A&E don't worry about the Sherrif, worry about the entire family of viewers you just lost in my home opening your mouths, we actually have purchasing power. How come CNN is not doing a story on the negative financial impact on all the stakeholders at A&E for their ignorant misaligned effort at social engineering while disregarding the beliefs of a majority of Americans. They would have been wiser to stay with their Trojan programming agenda, but now I will have to take an extra step and block that channel with LOGO of my Direct TV box. Bravo!

The ignorance is hilarious. Someone saying A&E doesn't own their cameras, editing, and distribution. Don't think the Sheriff is saying they don't just that as they use the public air waves we the public have the right to not listen as a consequence. His facilities are his too and A&E has no right to be there without his permission. It is a free country though so next time your in his county feel free to call his 911 system and express your point of view, and they will remove you from their broadcast too into a semi private, spartanly decorated room probably larger than the New York apartment your blogging from because you know "hey criminals should have rights".

Look at the comments. Someone said Mayor should speak for the County? What? The Mayor of a city has nothing to do with the Sheriff of a county nor its operations, both are elected to separate office and neither are in the the same chain-of-command. The only law enforcement official that can be manipulated and placed under the thumb of your Mayor is your Chief of Police. Why do you think when the left wants to manipulate on gun control they always dip into the Police Chief well. Wonderful unsophisticated arguments that your standard bearers present here, we appreciate these displays and then to see these ignorant argue their superiority.

    January 6, 2014 at 12:07 pm |
  120. Benevelous

Of course we should let corporations, private companies, and anyone with money assert their rights over yours. Why give you due process before seizing your property if its a private company or our government that better knows how you should live your live then, just jet them take your property, your speech, your freedom. That is the point a lot are arguing for, really are you that ignorant. Then you think the Sheriff is foolish for arguing to protect civil rights. And that is the Sadder part, people aren't allowed to have belief anymore in this country for fear of "offending" someone else. Cheers to Robertson, a Real American for having the stones to speak his beliefs without fear.

People seem to forget the Constitution of the USA- Freedom of Speech. Just because you have an opinion others don't like doesn't make it wrong. what's wrong is when you violate the rights of others because you don't like their beliefs, i.e the beatings and harassment of gays. But to simply speak out and disagree with that lifestyle because it offends your religious senses is not, will not and should not be a crime! People from the Northern US (and I am one) don't understand the Southern US- don't try to push your belief systems on them, its wrong and things work just find downs South without the media and Northerners interfering. When you go after a guy for stating his Constitutionally-Protected Opinion then you are trying to take his God-Given American Rights from him......And that is just WRONG!!

Why is everyone so surprised when a redneck speaks his conservative mind? Robertson has every right to say what he believes, but a privately held TV network has every right not to give him a platform if they feel it damages their public reputation. Also a local sheriff shouldn't have the right to interfere with law abiding citizens (the TV crew) for doing their job, just because he doesn't like what the network did with the show.

If the man is seen praying with his family around the dinner table EVERY WEEK, how the heck does this fool think A&E is not allowing him to broadcast his Christian beliefs? – they are giving him a darn platform!!!! If anything, Christians should be praising A&E for putting their faith out there for the world to see – too bad Phil tarnished a family friendly show with his filthy unchristian mouth. It is not his faith that is the issue, it is the disgusting words he used to describe it INACCURATELY. Women should never have their womanhood compared to an anus. That is hateful and as a woman I was profoundly offended by his sickening banter.

Our nation is full of idiots. That's about all I can so. I have absolutely no problem with Phil Robertson saying what he said. Big freaking deal. It's his belief. He's a shallow minded, good hearted person who expressed his beliefs. I also have no problem with A&E suspending him. Has NOTHING to do with free speech and everything to do with a company suspending an employee that has embarressed them with his close minded bigotted statement. A&E has every right to suspend him (and every right to unsuspend him when they realize they hurt their business by suspending him). I have a HUGE problem with a sheriff saying a company isn't welcome in his county because of their political or religious stance. He's the sheriff – not God – he doesn't get to decide who can and can't enter his county. We all can. Ugh. Idiots.

Only some ignoramus Sheriff in the South would make a statement like "So and So are now welcome in my County". First of all, it is not his County. Second of all, his county is in the USA and as Americans, we can go wherever we dam well please in the USA. So, up yours Sheriff Miller!!

Sheriff Miller feels the network should let Robertson express his "Christian values".

If he expresses one form of Christian values he should also express what the bible says; he should kill the "Duck" family for working sundays.

Hypocrisy and ignorance....would the same "free speech" apply to those who aren't Christian?

Since when does a Sheriff get to decide who is and isn't allowed to enter the county?

Instituting the new Jim Crowe law are you?

A&E Network is not welcome in his county because A&E Network carries cameras. And the way Law Enforcement is practiced in his county would not stand up under the scrutiny of the viewing public. This Sheriff is a bass-ackwards redneck of the highest order. He DOESN'T WANT you to see how his men treat minorities and the poor in "his" county.

THAT's why A&E Network is not welcome. In "his" county.

Phil Robertson is a scary critter.

I don't support either him or his entire clan of backwards bigots. They are racists who hide behind the bible when it suits them..

Fu** the Duck. Bunch of hillbillies.

And people elected this halfwit? Shouldn't he be more concerned with dealing with the criminals in his county then making a name for himself over an idiotic issue all around?

Looks like a lot of the Sheriff's personal friends are posting here.

He can't stop A & E from coming to his county and more than A & E can stop Phil from expressing his views (IMO silly as they are).

"Not welcome" ? Is this a public official threatening or at least implying employees of this company would encounter trouble in his jurisdiction that others would not? Maybe he needs to close a bridge lane or two while he's at it, so that they know he's serious about being punitive in his official role.

The same individuals who claim "individual rights" as well as" freedom of speech" are hypocritical. Although we don`t condone the comments, this is his viewpoint not mine. I`m not aware of anyone who`s walked in his shoes, nor shared in his life experiences, so while its hard to excuse his comments, respect for him as a person, ( just like I want for myself ) as well as the comments made shouldn't be debated nor argued that somehow he is incorrect in his beliefs. I don`t know him, never lived in his house, so to condem based on just what he said would be incorrect for anyone to do, however I would remind the individuals who`ve commented here, they feel the way they do based upon their experiences, feelings regarding these inflamitory comments by this individual are comments and define how they feel regarding these comments by Mr. Roberts. I would close by saying "if you live in a glass house ( and most of us do) we might consider that their might be someone who`ll throw stones at it because of our particular viewpoint as well.

All these weeks later, it's amazing to me to read from knuckle-dragging yahoos who do not understand that this is not and never was a "freedom of speech" issue. It was not the government who put Phil R. on suspension. A&E is a private business and can do whatever it wishes within the law. But honestly, things like Reason and Understanding of the Law aren't supposed to apply here – in the minds of many – because religion is involved and everything is supposed to take a back seat to that. I'd be a happy man if I never, ever had to hear another word about someone else's religion

Great! Now we have a Sheriff that supports this guy. It seems funny to me that all of you that supported Phil when he came out on a rant about peoples private lives and how he is morally opposed to it, gave him all of your support. Does this mean you also support his belief on pedophilia? I suppose it does since he has come out and said that girls sould be married off by age 15. Redneck intelligence at its best.

So Sherriff Publicity Seeker supports Camouflage Publicity Seeker and they both get publicity. Yay for reality TV as a religion.

More ignorant Christians who think "freedom of speech" only applies to them. You can't claim "freedom to always be right and bend reality when someone disagrees with me".

Personally, I think this is about people wanting to get a green light from the (The Bible, Their Pastor, Duck Hunters, Gays in Hollywood) ..Choose One; in order to express their hatreds. I also saw a video where Phil was saying women were gonna be money grubbing whores by the time they are 20... So his advice was to marry them at 15-16 and that way you can control them, keep em pregnant and they will pluck your Ducks. I really dont think that God cares that much who you have relations with. But I choose to use the bible for my beliefs, which are to love thy enemy, reach out to those who do not know the changes that Jesus can make in your life.. There is room for all of us, even ol' Boss Hoss Sherriff.. Hell, I bet he's a nice person.

And A and E. You guys are a bunch of hypocrites... You make money off ordinary people going about there lives, but when they don't act like your puppets, well hold the money press, but then you changed your mind Aand E. Phil didnt change his.. So I respect the man cause he stands by is beliefs.. A&E.. you guys would sell your Mother out if you made money and got ratings

Interesting that an officer of the law is against A&E's right to free speech.

Sheriff Billy-Joe-Bob-Buford needs to be informed that he can't cancel the Constitution because A and E made a corporate decision he doesn't like. The combination of Low IQ , a badge and a gun is dangerous.

  157. JT

Hurm.... So the good sheriff is seeking to support free speech..... By suppressing free speech (of A&E)? Does anyone else see a problem with this? Add to this the fact that A&E filming in his county is a large source of revenue for the county and I think you have a large incentive in that county to elect a NEW sheriff.

So much for a free country. A&E can't choose what message they put on their network, OR where to go. "We don't like their kind 'round here!" Welcome to Georgia.

not welcome in "his county" Does that mean whenever A&E enter the county Will they be hassle or arrested without just cause? If you ignore then and don't give them a warm smile or wave that fine, but any more than that you are require to treat them equally while doing your duty as an officer of the law. You have the right to disagree with them but that about it.

    "His county?
Do I need his permission to drive through?
Must be a republican to think he should decide what people should think and do.
Will he permit a muslim to give his religious values in "His County"? I thought not.
Freedom is only for someone who thinks like he does.

The sheriff is making ridiculous statements. He does not have the legal right to prevent A&E or any other person or company to travel through or do business in his county, regardless of what he thinks. Last I heard we live in a democracy, not a theocratic dictatorship.

Apparently, intelligence is not a factor for being a Georgia Sheriff... and being stationed there 3 times in my Army career only confirms my observation.
