Dear Ms. Whitfield,
After watching your interview with one of the surviving Tusgegee Airman, Lt. Col. Bob Friend, and then hearing of your own fathers' service with this group, I wanted to reach out and address a concern expressed, about a mutual service member not being decorated for war related injuries, made by Colonel Friend.
First, a bit of background. My own father, Lt. Col. Edward J Burns Jr. was a Lt in the Army Air Corps, 98th Bomb Group, serving as a B-24 Bombadier, stationed in Lecci, Italy back in 1944 – 1945. A few years ago, as we were watching TV together, a promo came on for a PBS special on the Tusgegee Airman. My father sat bolt-upright in his chair and turned to me and said "The Tusgegee Airmen flew my wing – those guys were the very best", and then (with tears in his eyes) "I owe those guys my life". My father and his pilot, Sam Wilson, then, were the only surviving members of their crew.
When my father retired, he volunteered at the Air Base at Ft Bragg, NC. Basically, he answered the phones and helped widows with questions on survivors benefits and such. At one point, he came to be introduced to a fellow named Major John Elskamp. Major Elskamp was also a member of the Air Force, although much younger than my Dad.
Now here is where it gets interesting; Major Elskamp is trying to get a non-profit organization called "Veterans Legacy" off the ground. What they do is to take cases of veterans that have stories about episodes that occurred in the heat of battle, that would normally be recognized but somehow were not, and then John and his small group of volunteers will take the information, corroberate all accounts to military records, fill out all the necessary paperwork and try to correct the shortcoming and get these folks the recognition that they deserve.
John and I spoke a couple of months ago. It seems that my father was trying to get his Pilot, Sam Wilson decorated for something that happened back in WWII and had asked John's help ( I have my Dad's handwritten account – fascinating...). Sam, as it turned out, had in turn, recommended that my Dad be decorated for the same instance.
John assured me that both my Dad and Sam's applications were still being pursued. He had called my Dad to get his signature on some new paperwork (for a new Congressman elect) only to find out that my Dad had passed away this past July 8, 2011. Sam, evidently, had passed away two years prior.
Major John Elskamp continues to press on for a now post-humous Distinguished Flying Cross award for both Sam and my Dad. This, along with approximately eighty other well deserved awards petitions. I think it would be an honor if we could get Colonel Friends buddy added to this caseload, an honor to all of them and to our own fathers' memory.
