Student Buried In Debt, Trying to Dig Out

Will President Barack Obama's push to change America's student loan system help students buried in debt? Watch CNN NewsRoom's Kyra Phillips' interview with student Candace Lowe who is more than $15,00 in debt and learn how a phone call may remove the threat of default on one of her loans.

Post interview follow up: When I called Candace's loan company before Kyra's interview I was told they could not discuss the specifics of her loan without Candace's written consent. But apparently the call from CNN did get their attention. Within minutes of my call, the loan company called Candace's cell phone. Candace tells me the company apologized for their poor customer service and told her they would work with her on resolving the situation. When I last spoke with Candace after her interview on CNN NewsRoom she said she was waiting for a promised call back from the company to work out her payment situation. We'll keep you updated.

Why aren't more students applying to be Resident Assistants while in college? At Purdue University they pay our entire room/board, and tuition? We have Pharmacy majors, Pre-Med majors, Engineers, and myself I am going into Education. It is like an extra job, but it makes college FREE!

As a steady viewer, I am only now beginning to appreciate what a tough job you have. And when you help a person, like Candace today, those are not just nice words, but a really nice deed too! Thanks, Carrie, for your greetings. Best wishes to one & all.

equity seems to be the hot topic – probably a theme that runs through much of your Newsroom, and justice for all. charity, i suppose, is important too, but justice and rights and the rule of law are, i guess, a different matter!!! i pray everyone will be filled with what they are most thirsting for – that would be like a foretaste of heaven! even a cup of cold water or someone to rub one's feet, whatever comfort is needed after a long race to the finish!

(didn't see a category for the economy so I am posting here)

I just saw a spot during John Kings program about LAS VEGAS HURTING. Recently we looked for shows playing in Las Vegas and were shocked by the outrageous prices the casinos are charging for them. I would think that headliners would recognize the state of the country and adjust their prices accordingly. Many people USED to go to Las Vegas to see their favorite singer or show, now no one can afford the cost of a headlining show. Most of these performers are worth tens of millions of dollars or more and should show some compassion. Being from Detroit, I recently had the pleasure and opportunity to see the Jay Leno Stimulus show and gained an alot of respect or Mr. Leno. Too bad more entertainers and venues don't follow suit and at least drop their prices. The average American like me made them famous and rich.

    thank you,

    Erasmia (annette) Novotny

    Utopian Democracy

    2009

Declaration: Mankind is sovereign upon the earth, the earth and all its recourses are the property of all the people of the earth. We have no alternative but to change from the robber Barron competitive system of power influence and patronage that has persisted from the first human organizations /societies. To a more cooperative constitutional direct democracy ,were the power rests with the masses and the politician and bureaucracy is to serve the people rather then lead the people .A system of social order and governance that sets as it priority to respond to the needs of the people in a way that ensures the freedom of the people and create the economy and an infrastructure that ensures that all humanity has what they need to live a free and productive life with the resources to comfortably support their needs and the needs of their families. Free from the unfair advantages that have limited many to the advantage of the few .We must gain control of our Governments from the wealthy elite that dominate and control our economies .Our Government must serve the people ,collect taxes and provide fully funded uncorrupted fare ,health care system, educational system, economy and labour laws that ensure fair pay and benefits (no working poor).Judicial system and honest police forces to protect the people and keep the peace .With the checks and balances built in to systematically review and respond to complaints and inequities in the system to keep all systems functioning honestly and moving towards a society with a more perfect peace ,justice ,and a more perfect freedom. No poor no illiterate ,no homeless, no war .

We the people must assert out right and rule .If farely structured and with the right attitude mankind can and must rise to the challenge and to grow up and husband develop and fairly distribute the earth resourses.we are collectively smart enough to figure out how to create enough wealth that no one on earth need to be hungry ,alone, ignorant or homeless .or sick .

The shamefull dominance and sevier and deadly exploitation of the masses of humanity at the hands of the few ultra rich and gready powerful must stop .the preasure on the masses of humanity world wide are about to erupt into global war

I was thrilled to see your interview with the college student in debt with Sallie Mae biting at her heels...I have four children all college graduates who unfortunately got loans from Sallie Mae. We have been dealing with this corrupt company for 7 years now, and cannot figure out why NO ONE is willing to take on this predator in the lending field. I have written to EVERY SINGLE Congressperson and Senator, and our Attorney General, (Andrew Cuomo) regarding this situation. By the time our children have paid off their school loans they will have paid a total of $1,000,000 due to unchecked interest rates, fines, late fees etc. There is no formula they can point to to justify these numbers. Payments are never the same, they can go up "just because". We are never "allowed" to speak with just one loan officer or supervisor. We are OFTEN hung up on when we ask "prying" questions and frequently transferred to offices overseas. Deregulation of this company was the worst thing our government could have done. There is NO legal recourse due to laws that protect this predator. We are not alone. There are several websites devoted to this problem, see studentjustice.org . These recent grads are drowning with no life preserver in sight. I was happy that you could help this student, however what about the thousands of students who do not have CNN looking out for them? Kyra, what about a full investigation into this scourge of a company? You would be helping countless students begin to live normal lives, free from harassment and able to take jobs in the field they were trained for, instead of taking waitressing jobs because it pays more money so they can pay their Sallie Mae school loans. I was happy to see that President Obama is cutting out this horrible middleman. That will help future students. BUT...what about those poor grads who are stuck with this monkey on their backs? They are no less important, and they need help.

As for Aaron's comment, I agree, getting the RA's job in college is a great way to help with college costs, but just how many students will get that kind of "plum-job"? Thanks for listening and I hope CNN will consider taking on the Sallie Mae giant.

I am currently enrolled in my Masters program and will graduate in Jan. of 2010 and my student loans and Sallie Mae will also come due and unless I find a higher paying job; I will not be able to pay my student loan payments. I know that pursuing an education is the best thing a person can do in their lives but the cost is way higher if you cannot afford to pay for it in the end. Cutting out the middle man will greatly reduce the problems that have been occurring for years, but it will take years for us and previous students to get out of this endless hole we seem to be in. Just a comment about Sallie Mae, they are more than willing to give you the money but when it comes to working with you to pay it back "Watch out" they are like the devil himself!!!!!
