Swine Flu Update with Elizabeth Cohen

Newly sworn-in Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius held a news conference yesterday to update the rapidly growing number of swine flu cases. Sebelius said officials expect to see even more cases, more hospitalizations and sadly, more deaths in the United States.

CNN Senior Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen joined Tony Harris to discuss the threat.

Stop with the grades. It wasn't a good idea in the first place, but continuing at this point- well, I can't take it anymore. Switched the channel within 5 seconds of tuning in.

The bigger issue is that there really is a more elevated way to communicate what is happening other than polling every move that is made, many times each day. The public's opinion is not the last word in responsible news reporting.

E-Coli and Salmonella travel on our produce from Mexico! My question is how long will this virus live on our produce imported from Mexico once the workers are sneezing and coughing on it? Is it incubated in the cooling trucks and how much washing must be done to remove it from a particular fruit or vegetable?????

Just curious if this is another way of transmission not yet discussed!

    Thanks for your response!

Is it safe to use the sinks in public bathrooms? I can imagine how many germs are on those faucets!

GO JOE GO. VP Biden spoke this morning and everybody is jumping all over him for telling the truth. Finally someone who can give it to me straight without candycoating the truth. I am so tired of politically correct comments and half truths that I find him refreshing. I saw this spokesperson from minnesota lie about the administration not reaching out to republicans and that is not true based on what you cnn reports.

I hope you can find out about the first 250 billion dollars that the bush administration squandered with no accountability to anyone.

As for the swine flu this is becominging way out of hand 161 confirmed cases world wide and u keep going and going and going on about it. how many people die from the common cold yearly?

I don't know why everyone is jumping on VP Biden for his remarks on travel. He didn't start the scare, the World Health Org. did a good job of frightening everyone. Everyone should be aware and react within their comfort zone – if that means not traveling in confined quarters, that is their decision. Others will live their lives as usual, but with understandable precautions. It is an individual issue. As far as airline travel is concerned, when my friend was undergoing cancer treatment, she was told to avoid air travel because the air is recirculated on planes as are any germs, so using that mode of transportation would not be recommended. Maybe the airlines should find a way to clean the recycled air on the planes to address this problem, if they haven't already. Thank you.

Swine flu is spread to depress the economy. It is a way to put a hold on health care reform. It is a way to overload an administration, and devastate third world countries. For several generations of secret manipulations, the contradiction between theory and reality could be rationalized as the unfortunate result of the poverty of the societies, of the mistakes of individual secret politics, or of the malevolence of the racist supremacy who seek to crush the power class and impacting themselves in the end. The American school system is vastly affected because of the lack of proper cleaning implemented. Mass transits are next because the authorities are not cleaning and disinfecting the transportations. Americans we need to take steps in preparing ourselves, we can't depend on the health care system, strengthen our immune system: vitamins, cleansing etc. It is a secret war going on. Let us stand behind our President, for the change we need,

What a shame... but who could not see the looming end of American auto manufacturing dominence. As an average American I attempted to show my loyalty by buying the Chrysler Jeep product and was rewarded with a horrific repair record, mounting repair costs and a steep decline in the cars resale value. Alternatively I started buying more dependable Asian imports and even worse, once my financial position improved... I entered the luxury market determined to only buy European models like Porsche, Mercedes and Ferrari for whom there are no comparable American counterparts. What a shame that even the most loyal among us could not buy American automobiles without being kicked in the teeth by the poor record, and ultimate abdication, of the American automotive industry. How sad!

Good Job CNN!!!! In your zeal to get a Pulitzer you have now driven the fear level up several notches by calling this flu the "Killer Virus". So far this is no worse than a regular flu outbreak and you're adding to people's fear by hyping up your broadcasts. You've set a new high for Irresponsible!

A recent news story on swine flu spoke of difficulty for farmers in Egypt about what they were doing about their 600,000 hogs. My question is why there are 600,000 hogs in a Muslim nation?

to dr. cohen every body needs to do there part in keeping our country safe and one way they can do this is to keep the mosquito larva under control its simple to do with bleach one cap full of bleach to one gallon of water this kills the larva and why is it important to kill mosquitoes the reason is because they spread the flu check washing machines puddles any thing you can just pour the water out of then empty it out you can see the baby larva swimming in the water this wont stop the spread but it does help .

The problem I see is the numbers are not reliable. Using "confirmed" cases against "confirmed" deaths / hospitalizations isn't accurate. You cannot cherry pick what is counted and what is not and expect it to result in a correct CFR (case facility rate). For a more accurate CFR, you must include ALL suspected cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

I see the administration attempting to tone down this crisis so not to spook the markets. There is nothing they can do to stop this, but I don't think we should tone down the impact that it is GOING to have.

I think what you are seeing in Mexico will occur around the world. The closing of schools, businesses, restaurants, theaters, malls, etc... and will cause MASSIVE business and job losses. This could not have come at a worse time and somehow the market goes up.

The scary part about this is when this virus goes around the 3rd world countries it has a good chance of mutating and coming back in multiple "waves". There will be significant "noise" with this first wave (massive infections). I doubt they will catch a more deadly mutation until it is again too late to stop.

Let the market go up... it will crash worse than the great depression if this virus results in multiple waves even if the CFR is not high. WHO Level 5 IS NOT THE NORMAL FLU. This government is acting like it's no big deal and everyone will get complacent if this wave is a mild one, which will leave us very vulnerable to a second wave with a much higher CFR.

There has been tons of talk about what the Governments, and health officials are doing. What about the companies like Smithfield who have these huge pig farms? What are they doing? Have they issued any statments, offered to help the small villages in Mexico that are close to their factories?

She also showed Jealousy in her tone of voice. Toward Dr Reichard. America is a conglomerate of the wor;d we have people with different spelling, grammer and pronoucations.
Dr cohen should be out of CNN? Sorry by saying that I am stooping to her levell.

this is either from man-manipulated virus strategically placed like they were working on back in 2004 or a result of factory farms. People don't think there are laws and consequences to actions against God and nature. God gave us everything we need to heal thyself without toxic chemicals in drugs, food and personal care products. When we don't allow animals, used as food (or testing), to move and be treated humanly and live without tons and tons of anti-biotics in nthem and living in their own feces ..what do you expect? Also how we treat farmers .. real farmers that use real seeds and not Monsanto's GMO high priced seeds. Right now worldwide, governments and "agencies" are working together to put the farmers out of business. They are going broke and in the case of India, Indian farmers are commiting suicide due to losing their livelihood, their farms. 10 corporations now own two-thirds of all seeds/production (food supply). Yes this is all related. They arealso perfectly alright with the disapperence of the bees. Pesticides are directly linked to the collapse of the bees and it's the Monsantos of the world that are not only putting farmers out of business, killing them but also turning us into lab rats. . causing disease. .then the masses rely and trust the medical/drug industry to save them. He who controls the food (and water) supply, controls the people. They made us sick (and kill a few million along the way) and making the drug companies and the Monsantos ofthe world RICH!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 in 2.5 men and women will get cancer. One hundred years ago, it was 1 in 500. Wake up!! The people that are for eugenics also get something out of this. . less population

From the looks of it, We are only sick if the CDC tells us we are sick! Maybe someone should explain that to the tens of thousands out here that have been sent home by medical facilities and told to call only if the vomiting fever & cough gets worse in 24 hours !! Someone needs to REALLY be honest with the general public, cuz I bet my retirement that there are way more cases than the 300 reported.

I wish Elizabeth Cohn would look into the fact that on medical costs i have too see my pain doctor every month for my drug fix which is 5mg methadone for Neuropathy .Because of the government DEA they require drug tests monthly visits. Why can't my PCP do this and get the government out of it .This one reason why costs are so high . the state of GA also contributes to it with there laws. The only people that benefit are the doctors i wonder if they and there lobbies have anything to do with it.
