From CNN Field Producer Erin Levin:
The past few months I have been struck by the generosity within the CNN Newsroom. Despite the rough economy we face ourselves and report on every day, all of the show teams, news gatherers and even anchors are sporting and supporting an incredible micro-finance group and their handmade Ugandan crafts. You can share this experience with us!
Here’s a friendly reminder and news alert for you to celebrate your sweet moms – Mother’s Day is this Sunday! Mother’s Day was first suggested over 100 years ago by Julia Ward Howe to be a day mothers could rally for peace. In accordance with the founding of this special day, I propose spreading peace in honor of our moms. My mom has given my brother and me the world. Thanks to her loving us so well, we’ve learned the gift of serving others. It’s through this that I became aware of the Ugandan American Partnership Organization and was able to produce a story highlighting the work three amazing young women are doing to empower widows and orphans across Uganda. This Mother’s Day, you can give your mom a one-of-a-kind, eco-friendly necklace or craft made by the hands of these beautiful Ugandan women – your mom will have something very special and the funds will go to help communities in Uganda.
I hope you enjoy this story; it has infected my heart and changed my whole life. Thank you mom for inspiring me and letting me chase my dreams! Thank you Don's mom, Kathrine Lemon Clark, for the delicious treats you bring to us in the CNN Newsroom when you are in town!
We would love to hear from all of you. Let us know what you’re doing this Mother’s Day! If you would like to get your mom a gift from UAPO, click here or comment and we can send one to her for you!
So glad to hear that CNN offers these necklaces. I traveled to East Africa last year and returned with a bag full of them. Women of all ages LOVED them! I wanted to buy more but wasn't sure where I could find them. They would make excellent gifts for mothers and grandmothers alike this year!!
This shows that no matter how times are tough we can still help each other, be better citizens and make the world better. The necklaces are great! I see a lot of people wearing them throughout CNN. Hope the trend catches on.
What an awesome project to help women help themselves. Very inspiring. I love my necklace and it reminds me daily that we can all do something somehow to make someones life a little brighter. Thanks for the great story and for helping these women!
