Could federal employees’ insurance hold the key to health care reform?

In our interview Wednesday with Dr. J. James Rohack, president of the American Medical Association, he expressed interest in using the federal employees’ insurance program to help solve the healthcare crisis. Would it work? Tony Harris and CNN Senior Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen discuss.

I understand the AMA's point about reinventing the wheel but there are many medical issues that the AMA has not taken a stand on such as Trigeminal Neuralgia which leaves many people going from doctor to doctor without any relief and bill after bill.
The AMA also has a responsibility to take a stand on specifice illnesses and not play the we need more studies path because that will never help solved the problems facing Americans. It should not take 30-100 years of research and still not have a stand.
Doctors cause injuries but patients have no way to be compenstated because no doctor will admit it and no other doctor will say another doctor caused the injury. Maybe if they did their malpractice insurance wouldn't be so high.
I would like to see the day when money is not more important than peoples lives.

Federal Employees Health Insurance is all I want. I just want the option. President Obama campaingned on it and this promise contributed to his landslide victory. Any time you interview a Republican politician they are going to have the same "lock step" mentality that they always have had. They try to present more options as a "reduction" of our options, and pretend they know what Americans want. I'm one of those Americans and I want health care reform. I WANT THE FEDERAL EMPLOYEE HEALTH COVERAGE THAT WAS PROMISED TO US!

I am concerned by your story of Mrs. Holmes from Ontario. While I will admit that Canada's health care system isn't perfect, my understanding is that in the rare situations where safety is endangered by wait times the province will reimburse the patient for their expenses to travel to another province or state for treatment. I am curious at to why this was not the case with Mrs. Holmes.

It is a point of pride for us Canadians that we help each other through injury and sickness. For us it is a major government scandal frought with inquiries and loss of power should a government allow anyone to fall through the cracks. Yet in the United States the government has somehow been able to resolve themselves of this responsibility, allowing health insurance to bankrupt many of your employers while also leaving millions of individuals and families without coverage.

    Tony,
Regarding taxing the rich and their not having "enough money to fund all we want to do", well, maybe they do. As it is today the top 10% of earners in the U.S., represent 38% of income but 68% of Federal income tax paid. If the next 10% of earners are added, the top 20% represent nearly 83% of Federal tax revenues.

The implication is that the bottom 80% of earners only contribute 17% of tax revenues on 48% of the earnings. So if we need money we should go to where the money is!

I'm for universal healthcare. It's a moral issue, a human right.

I've tried to come up with one of many ideas to save big bucks in the healthcare industry...one idea...mandatory annual continuing medical education for all US citizens.
Knowledge is the difference between life and death.

Here's my story, one of many many stories. If you want to print this, please let me know. I'll send you the presentable version.

I had it in paragraph form, but when I inserted it into this website, it merged the paragraphs.

It seems to me that the obvious method of funding a national health care program should be done as it is Europe with a VAT tax. This method will fund the program based on one's spending habits. The more you spend the more you pay, hence I suppose, it weighs heavier on the wealthy as they will buy more. We will all benefit from a national health care plan so we should ALL pay to fund it. Employed or not we will partake of health care just like food, utilities, gas etc. so why should we not all shoulder the financial burden? No one objects to the unemployed being taxed on other products they purchase. Why health care?

I believe we are missing the boat. I believe all our financial problems stem from the out sourcing of our jobs by greedy corperations who have no loyalty to our country just to profits. Until we stop the flow of jobs out of this country we will not only not solve our current problems but will encounter many more new ones!
We need our elected officials to serve our needs and stop serving the needs of special interest lobbyists

Health Care Reform; I would like to know why the rich and wealthy can collect Medicare and can get Medicare Insurance. If the government would stop this they would have alot of money to get Health Care Reform started.

Tony as a Brit who lived in England for 52 years, have been the recieipnt of their health are it is called the NHS every living working British Citizen pays for it through their working lives taken out of their wages. and the do not mind because believe me it really works, they can even have private insurance in addition if they can afford it.
I have listen to m,any media commentors especially from the Fox news making some stupid remarks, but I choose to ignore it because they are ignorant. We need it especially for those 47 Million people who have no insurance. I think that those naysayers should look at article 25 on the declaration of human rights, and read it before they make their stupid and unfounded remarks.

When complaining about "taxing the rich", why does no one mention that the top bracket went from 71% under Reagan, when our economy was BOOMING, to 30 something % today?

Take away the health insurance from all congressional persons. When the last American or legal resident gets health insurance then the Senators and Representitives get the same health care, but nothing more. Watch Congress do something!

    Tony,
Even in the 9th grade we could easily identify marxism. Re distribution of wealth. Sadly the Pope now wants to do away with capitalism, and depend on a "World Body" government, instead of God. All of our freedom and liberty comes from God in our Constitution and Declaration of Independance on loan to the government from each individual. America was not built by the government, nor has it ever become stronger by taking from the rich and giving to the poor!
    God bless,
    W.David Smith, Esq.

Healthcare is not only needed, but is the right of all Americvans, even in the most powerful country in the world, there is and always will be people that will need a handup in life, we say we are a Christian nation, but is this in words only but not in deed, article 25 of the declaration of human rights, was signed by this country with others and it was ratified, but we hav e not lived up to it, I would suggest that
those in Congress and the Senate who argue about cost give this some thought, this a rich ans powerful country and it is a shame on our nation that some of our citizen should live the way they do. time to wake up America and foll,ow our present leader of this nation.

I do understand the feelings of many on this hot topic but common sence will privale eventually, so instead of me explaining myself I think I will just pray to our living Creator grant his holy spirit to our leaders and give them the wisdom they will need to overcome this difference that is holding up this particular legislation.
