Today's National Weather

Several days of triple-digit temperatures will continue in the southern and central Plains today. Heat indices of 105-110 Fahrenheit are in the forecast for this afternoon. Some relief is in the forecast. Afternoon highs should drop down to the mid- to upper-90s by the weekend.

There’s a slight risk of isolated severe thunderstorms across the Front Range of the Rockies, the upper Midwest, Great Lakes and mid-Mississippi River Valleys this afternoon and evening. Large hail and damaging winds will accompany the stronger storms. A few isolated tornadoes will also be possible.

A few of our medium range forecast models are predicting much cooler air across the eastern half of the Nation this weekend. A strong cold front is forecasted to move southeastward out of Canada late this week and through the weekend. The cool air will sweep southward behind the front all the way to the Gulf Coast. Record low temperatures will be in jeopardy on Sunday morning across portions of the Midwest and Great Lakes. Atlanta temperatures may drop into the upper 50s by Sunday morning.
