Wanna buy an ad to run during the Super Bowl? Well you are, whether you want to or not. The U.S. Census Bureau is buying a $2.5 million commercial in the third quarter. That's on top of a couple 30-second spots in the pre-game show. All with your tax dollars.
Census officials say it's actually a good deal for taxpayers since close to 100 million people will be watching Sunday's big game. They say getting the word out to that many people will save millions in the long run, by offsetting the cost of sending census workers to households that don't return their questionnaires.
Critics say it's a huge waste of money, and exactly the type of out-of-control spending that inspired the Tea Party movement.
