Working Mom, Drinking Mom: "Everybody Knows Somebody"

This month Working Mother magazine focuses on the problem of alcohol and drug addiction among working mothers.  The article is called "Everybody Knows Somebody."  Working Mother did a readers' survey and found 40 percent of them drink to cope with stress, 57 percent reported that they have misused prescription drugs.  CNN's Don Lemon spoke with the magazine's editor in chief, Suzanne Riss, about the problem.  He also received insight from Stefanie Wilder-Taylor, author, blogger, and recovering alcoholic.

Women now carry the majority of responsibility in their relationships, families, job, care-giving for others outside the home – while I do not condone using any mood altering substance to cope with stress and exhaustion, I certainly understand it! How about it males – interested in stepping up and carrying half the load yet?

I just want to say thank you for bringing this to light. No mom is proud that she has to turn to a substance to get through her day and we need support and help – and not just with quitting. We need to come together as families and communities to support all moms, not just working moms, so that mothers don't feel so overburdened that they turn to alcohol or drugs just to cope.
