Bake Sale Prices Based on Race

This is getting a lot of people talking. The College Republicans at the University of California, Berkeley is holding a bake sale on September 27 in which prices of their treats will be based on the customer’s race. The price for a cookie goes as follows:
– $2 for Whites
– $1.50 for Asians
– $1 for Latinos
– $0.75 for Blacks
– $0.25 for Native Americans
– $0.25 discounts for women

The organization’s President says their trying to make a point – they are protesting a proposed state bill, SB 185, which would use a student’s race in the college admission process.

They did this in 2002, 2003, 2004... it's pretty much just old hat for them.

I am 31 African-American and I am from Berkeley and at first I was taken back by this. When I read the story about why they are doing this, I find myself siding with the republicans on this (by the way I am not a republican or demecrate. Niether side seems to get it right). I am surprised that someone thought that this idea of using race, ginder and origins as a why to choose who goes to your university.

I wish that the rep. and the campus dem. would have gotten together and come up with this idea. Just like in D.C., they can't seem to come together for what matters most. Good luck with the bake sale. I would buy a few.

I think this bake sale idea is a wake up call! I am a Caucasian female, my income is below the poverty line, and my parents had never been to college. I get no breaks when it comes to my college tuition. Minorities in this country have worked so hard to end discrimination, so why are we using reverse discrimination.

UC Berkeley became one of the top Universities in the World by admitting students based on their academic ability. By injecting race into the admissions criteria it may compromise the quality of students and it reminds me of Hitler favoring the white Aryan race. In this ultra-competitive Flat World, we need to keep our Universities Competitive. The Chinese Universities are gaining on us, and SB 185 is helping them by compromising the quality of students admitted to UC Berkeley.

I couldnt believe the question that todays Anchor posed to the reporter; when he asked why the school chanchelor spoke out against this group for having "essentially" a bake Sale. Hooray to the reporter who corrected him and explained that this was racist. The anchor seemed to agree with these racist republicans. Who in their right mind would ask such a question unless they are un aware of the civil right act of 1964?
