With Lipitor going generic on Wednesday, Brooke and Allison Kosik discuss the popular name-brand prescription drugs that are losing their patent protections in 2011, opening the market for generics. While cheaper drugs may be good for your bottom line, what does it mean for the pharmaceutical industry and the future of other disease-fighting drugs?
Brooke-I just heard you speak about Liptor going generic-I am from Canada and I have a young lady doctor who insists these generic drugs do not do what they say they do. She thinks the original drug is the one we should be taking.
A couple of years ago my father was given the original drug for prostrait problems. He had an appointment with his doctor to discuss him using the original drug Flomax for his prostrate which had been replace with the generic one. He died before that appointment as on the operating table he had problems with his prostrate that required operating on. I am still angry that our government could just change medications whenever they want and we don't have a say. My doctor writes on all my presciptions NO SUB. I believe if they had not changed to the generic one he would not have had the problems he had. So please don't make generics sound so wonderful. I know they say its the same but I have my doubts.
Thanks
How can you report the financial benefits of using any generic drug, such as Lipitor, over the brand-name drug without informing the public about the negative risks! I am sure you are aware of the Supreme Court decision in June 2011 which alleviates generic drug manufacturers from any legal responsibility for injuries or death their drugs may cause. The essence of this Supreme Court ruling allows all generic drug manufacturers a "free pass", with little or no FDA oversight!
Merely a smiling visitant here to share the love (:, btw great layout.
