While not a complete fix to the issue, prior to the advent of artificial organs are readily available... if the antiquated practice of the death penalty gave the convicted an option for organ donation, they could opt to choose painless death by helium or nitric oxide, and the organs could be harvested and distributed with optimal conditions. I know, we are supposed to "utterly destroy" the killer, but killing their organs makes no sense in an enlightened society... assuming a society that practices the death penalty can be considered enlightened.
