Sheriff says A&E not welcome in his county
CNN's Brooke Baldwin talks to a Georgia sheriff who told A&E the network's video crews are not welcome in his county. Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller says A&E should not punish Phil Robertson of "Duck Dynasty" for his belief in the bible. Sheriff Miller feels the network should let Robertson express his "Christian values".

Standing up for our freedom of speech.
The sheriff is a silly man. All this over some very weird family in Louisiana? I guess I dont' get it, but I have never watched the show and never will.
What an odd thing for a sheriff to say...does he understand that that Phil man can speak till he's blue in the face under our govt. for our freedom of speech but private business does not allow you to speak disparagingly against people (well down right disgustingly against people) when you are representing that said company?
That's my sheriff and I support his stance. Way to go Sheriff.

I don't watch the show but I do believe that Phil Robertson was stating his personal beliefs in the bible. He was taught this as a child and still believes in these teachings. We do have freedom of religion and speech. From what was reported he never expressed his views in the TV show. If the sheriff believes in the same bible that Phil does he should stand up for his freedom of religion also.
Thank you for taking a stance for freedom of speech. I do believe that the Bible is Gods inspired words and that Phil had every right and obligation as a Christian to answer the questions asked of him with honesty and integrity. Thank you and Phil for standing firm, even when there is nothing to gain except eternity.
I agree with our sheriff, united we stand. And he is standing with his fellow man against a corrupt system that's trying to take God out of everything.
I'm tried of seeing People who aren't politically correct get slammed for expressing their beliefs. Everyone will get offended at some point, so we shouldn't have to walk on eggshell worried about it. freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of the People, that apparently can't tell we are all being oppressed.
As someone else said, it's not his freedom of speech that was attacked. A&E is watching out did itself on a business front. It's surprising how surprised they are at what he said, though, knowing his stance beforehand. But, I'm from this Georgia county and this means we'll be losing around $14 million, plus jobs. A&E films a lot here. We could definitely use the money.

Seems A&E should be required to hire a private security detail for a private, for profit business venture regardless of location. It would be horrible if a Douglas County citizen had an emergency call and response was delayed because officers were acting as security guards for A&E.
Yet another reason to stay away from Georgia.

As a life long resident of Douglas County Georgia, I (and most people I know) welcome A&E and any other entertainment group to Douglas County, GA. – They do not need Sheriff Miller's help or cooperation to do business here. We have a film commission that is working hard to bring the entertainment business to our county. Our doors are open to the world. We will leave the porch light on! Free speech is a right, but capitalism rules!
What a buffoon! How sad that in the early part of the 21st Century, we have people like these Duck Dynasty clowns whose thinking is stuck somewhere around the 12th Century!
Wow: he really doesn't understand free speech, the constitution, the difference between A&E and the government, his own job, or economics. He does nicely caricature uneducated red neck sheriffs, though... what a putz.
Seems a lot of people here don't understand what Freedom of Speech means. Let me break it down.
Freedom of Speech – You have the Freedom to say what you want so long as it doesn't violate the law or another persons rights. The government cannot lawfully censor you under freedom of speech.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM THE CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT YOU SAY. You have the RIGHT to say it, but other people and private businesses (like A & E) have the same right to not offer you business, fire you for how you reflect on the company, and comment back.
It is not a get out of jail free card for what you say. If you want proof of this, go some place with a lot of a certain minority and start giving racial epithets to them. Then, when they get mad, say "Freedom of Speech" and watch how they don't just shrug and go oh well I guess we have to endure this!
He spoke negatively in a public space and is getting the repercussions, so why should we now lose possible millions of dollars in revenue we could be making from a big network filming in our County? It's not going to effect THEIR bottom line, it's going to effect OURS. This is just plain silly.
I don't think Sheriff Miller banned A&E from all of Douglas County. They have filmed a few episodes of "Beyond Scared Straight" at the Douglas County Jail, and he said that A&E was no longer welcome to do that. He didn't say that the network couldn't come to Douglas County.
What nobody here seems to be taking into account is that, contract or not, the remainder of the duck dynasty family is going to stand behind Phil. That being said, it's a moot point that this Sheriff has decided to not allow A&E into his county. While I have always been one to defend the rights of every citizen in this country, I do not personally feel that A&E or anybody has a right to condemn somebody for expressing their opinion. I do not have a problem with people taking offense to it, I personally take offense to it, but that shouldn't mean that A&E should suspend Phil and hence prevent a show which will still attract millions of viewers from continuing. The be all end all here is, no Phil no Duck Dynasty, and that should be the point of view that should be looked at in this instance, especially by those of you claiming that capitalism is so important.
This sheriff will be reported to POST(Peace Officers Standards and Training), the Law Enforcement Professional conduct review organization and most likely will be in serious trouble for his actions. You can be upset, but you can not force a religious based personal decision on anyone, it is illegal. That is what this 'sheriff' is attempting to do. Hopefully A&E will not have to deal with him in the future and can use State Police services. It is not 1960 any more.
First, this is not a Free Speech issue. Nothing has or will stop him from saying whatever he wants. The Constitution doesn't guarantee us a TV show. And the irony in a Georgia Sheriff agreeing that blacks had no problem with Jim Crow laws or the fear of being lynched is staggering. And is it OK for Hobby Lobby to prohibit their employees from getting birth control while A&E can't exert control over what their employee says?
And these guys forgot to do one big thing. Erase their prior life from the Internet. These "good ol' boys" only became "good ol' boys for a TV show. They pretty much lived the life of rich kids before the show. They're laughing all the way to the bank.
In addition to his comments about gay people, Phil also said that black people LOVED Jim Crow and didn't want civil rights legislation
He has also said "You gotta marry these girls when they're 15 or 16". As the LOWEST age of consent in the US is 16 (17 in Louisiana), Phil was advocating statutory rape and/or borderline pedophilia. Nice hero you people have!
Everyone I know including myself have been and continue to boycott A&E for their decisions based on stupidity on this issue and those in the past. A&E thinks they can "wave their magic wand", be above us all and make decisions based on their stupidity. A&E, announce to the public the mistake that was made in your decision or more and more people will tune you out for good.
Great Louisiana. Send all those Shows (not DD please) to Los Angeles. Since we would love the business and jobs back in Hollywood.

These are the kinds of stunts that give law enforcement a bad name.
Let me assure you that most of the law enforcement community is interested in serving and protecting without making hate filled comments that only serve to divide communities and create unrest.
You don't have constitutional protection or a Bill of Rights in the workplace. You check your liberty out when you clock in. A&E was following their policy to sanction an employee for workplace ethics violations, totally within their rights as an employer here in America. Mr. Robertson also has the right to speak out about his beliefs, right, wrong or otherwise. I'll even defend his right to do so, even if I think he's wrong (which I do vehemently do). He just can't do it on A&E's time or dime, and A&E has made sure he knows it. Pretty much a non-story puffed up by the intolerant demanding tolerance again. Religion is insanity folks, stop believing in magic and get some real education.
Still waiting for all these "Free Speech!" folks to offer the Dixie Chicks their apology and pay them back all the money Clear Channel kicking them off the air cos tem. Oh, that's right, it's only free speech when it's something you agree with...

I tried watching that show once. I couldn't seem to get my iq to a low enough level to sit through it for any length of time.
As to A&E's decision, it's their business and their decision to make, not yours or mine. Whether or not anyone agrees with their decision is irrelevant. Anyone and everyone is more than free to switch the channel or remain on it.
As for the mantra [and the link] America was founded on Christian values, horse puckey. We separated from England due to taxation without representation. Since everyone owned a gun or three and had already proven they had zero problems with using them, the Founders made the wise decision to not p1$$ them off even more when our original laws were written.
Re: Christianity overall, that's fine with me if that's what someone wishes to follow and believe in, but it does cause a bit of a conundrum for yourselves when you defend Christianity, especially when you condemn others for not believing the same way you do.
Case in point, many of you are using the Bible as a reason to justify your dislike/hatred of gay people and ignoring the passages that dictate you leave the judgment to the higher authority.
There was a post in here somewhere about history. Cool. In the 4th century Emperor Constantine ordered the Bible to be rewritten,,, and it was. Books were removed and passages were rewritten or removed. King James ordered the Bible be rewritten once more so it would give him wiggle room to be able to do certain thigns he felt he needed to do. So now we have the King James version of an already manipulated Bible.
Christians aren't even following the word of "their god". They're following what Emperor Constantine and King James wanted them to follow.
One might as well watch and memorize all the lines from the Star Wars episodes and follow The Force.

Its not JUST that he spoke his religious beliefs. Its not that simple and black and white. He also showed his hatred to an entire group of people. Using the bible card is just another way of covering up that he hates. Period. There are people who believe the bible and there are those who dont. Until someone can prove the Bible is real and the truth, then its all based on faith so it cant be taken literally unless you show proof it is real.
AMERICA is a BACKWARD country. As evidenced by the millions and millions of people coming out to defend some guy with a long beard that does something with ducks. Number one no one is silencing Phil Robertson ability to say homophobic and racist things, but saying those things does not shelter you from the consequences of saying those things.
I will defend Phil Robertson and the KKK from saying whatever the hell they like, but they aren't immune from the consequences of what they say. A&E has every right to suspend or fire Phil Robertson or anyone else because their speech reflects badly on them.
To all the people saying that he was just reiterating the Bible, does the Bible also say that African-Americans were much happier living under a system that systematically discriminated and persecuted them- Segregation?
II wonder if all these "Free Speech" folks are now going to defend Martin Bashier, Bill Maher and other liberals who said things that some view as controversial, and individuals who subsequently lost their jobs. I doubt it since as stated before America is a backward nation.

A&E deciding to suspend Mr. Robertson is a private contractual civil matter, not a violation of the constitutional free speech right.
You, however, are a agent of the government. Therefore, you banning A&E from working in your county IS a violation of the constitutional rights of A&E employees. Shameful!
Being a 22 year old gay male growing up in Douglas County life has been everything but peaceful and this does not surprise me. It seems like most individuals out here can't acquire a thought process for themselves and that they are running out of minorities to hate. This is basically a Chick fil A sequel where the whole town waited hours to get a sandwich. From having issues with being bullied all through high school and nothing being done to having a DC police officer tell me he would try his best to arrest me because I looked gay; this is no shock to me.
Someone has intentionally set him and his family up to make sure that they do not benefit from Christmas sales. The timing is way too suspect-a family that follows Christ and whose sons just returned from the USO Christmas tour should not represent America, right?
I don't know of any law requiring government to open their buildings in order for a cable channel to film TV shows. And considering that they were filming in a jail, that was pretty nice of DCSO, even if they were getting paid. And from what I saw, he spoke to every news media outlet that asked him questions. This is A&E we're talking about.
A&E didn't like what Phil Robertson said, they suspended him. The Sheriff didn't like what they did, he no longer wants them in the jail while he is responsible for running it. I don't see where the issue is here, someone please correct me if I am missing something.

Is there sheriff? not interfering in instate commerce as A&E is headquartered in NY according to my reference. A potential violation of federal law. What gives him the right to be judge & jury in deciding who can do business in this county? He is basically guilty of the same of which he is accusing A&E of. He is wanting to punish A&E for their belief, the belief that THEIR show and network was damaged by the statements of their employee and it required corrective action.

And also apparently the Sherriff missed the part about how employers can indeed practice limiting of speech by employees, but that government officials, such as the Sherriff, cannot limit in any way the free speech activities of employers or employees alike. That is government censorship.

So, basically, only the Sherriff here is in the wrong. The "star" exercised his rights without interference, the employer exercised its rights as an employer to control its image, and the viewers and no viewers all exercised their rights to watch or not watch the show or the channel.

Sherriff – back to legal training. You have overstepped.
This is not a First Amendment issue. The Constitution protects you from the government. A&E also is entitled to Freedom of Expression (speech) under the Constitution. As a business, they make a decision. If you don't like that decision, you are free to change channels. In the mean time, Robertson is not in jail, not being prosecuted by the government for his words. If FOX wants to pick him up, and his supporters want to watch, so be it. You cannot support freedom of expression for some, but not others based on whether you agree with them or not.
It's going to take a long while for America to puke up all the foul religion it has absorbed over the years. There will still be uneducated yahoos like this guy for at least another generation. But it's happening before our eyes, out with the god nonsense and hate, in with the science and rational thinking.

He's there to serve and protect.. nobody handed over ownership of the county for him to say who is and isn't welcomed there. I'm all for Phil Robertson, but coming from a place where cops tend to think they are "above the law", this guy aggravates me.

Sherrif Andy Taylor and Phil need to read ALL the bible, not just the parts that match their agenda. Too bad both of these guys can't understand that they are using their religion to vainly infuence others to their small minded ways. Too bad that they do not understand that taking the lords name in Vain is a sin – I think I could also run through about 20 other things that they are doing against the teaching of the bible, but those don't make the news.
The sheriff needs a reminder in what the First Amendment is. A&E doesn't have any responsibility to "let Robertson express his "Christian values"." They may *choose* to so do (and since they're not going to kill their cash cow, they probably will), but they are under no *obligation* to make themselves a platform for anyone.
Meanwhile, thanks to both Phil Robertson and the A&E execs for confirming that my decision eight years ago to do without cable was absolutely correct. A 'vast wasteland' indeed.

This is a real problem – a sheriff does not have the authority to expell people from the county. In fact, the right of interstate migration is a constitutional right as well. While the South may not believe it, we are long passed the era that this should be occuring.
Freedom of speech means the government can't interfere with your speech. A&E can hire and fire whom they please; most likely there was a clause in the Duck Dynasty contract that specifically permits them to do it anyhow.
The sheriff, who is part of the government, doesn't get to decide who may or may not film in his county because he doesn't like who A&E fired.

Lynn, in many places such a detail is hired and it is off-duty officers. I guess some might consider it a good thing that this sheriff would suggest that his officers do not have a right to earn that extra income if a private company is breaking no laws but has opinions that differ from his own.
It is also worth noting that when the producers asked the Robertsons to not use "in Jesus' name" or some similar expression they did not take issue. It is also worth noting that the more fuss being raised leads to higher ratings and the sheriff will be able to keep sending officers on paid details. Funny how that works.

How many times must it be said? This ISN'T and never WAS about free speech. No one censored his comments nor told him he could not make them, just as no one has told him that many of us don't think much of his suggesting that 16 year old girls are the right age to marry. He can say those things all he wants, and no one will even attempt to stop him. He is FREE to say whatever he likes.
That doesn't mean we have to agree with him, nor does it obligate us to watch his television program. In fact, having never seen the show I'm all the more certain now that I never will. No one stops me from saying that because, like him, I also enjoy Freedom of Speech. I'll live with the consequences of saying what I did...but he gets the same...and if the consequences are severe (in his eyes) then so be it. I'll bet there's a lot of stuff in the Bible that he doesn't believe in...or worse that maybe he does. Does he carefully follow the rules about how to treat his slaves? I could be wrong but I think I've seen pictures of him wearing clothing of blended fibers. Those are both big biblical no-nos.
It's a shame all you people touting "Freedom of Speech" either didn't take a Civics/Government class or slept through it.
The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech..." The clause prohibits the government from banning speech because it does not agree with the message. It has nothing to do with an employer firing an employee for making remarks that the employer doesn't agree with or are contrary to the employer's views, etc. For example, people are fired and /or denied employment for things they have posted online all the time.
This county needs a new sheriff that actually understands the law.

Well, I'm not surprised by the ignorance of all these people. This is the southern USA we're talking about, where, unfortunately, I live. First, this is not and never has been a free speech issue. Our right to freedom of speech means the GOVERNMENT cannot punish you for your beliefs. No one from the government has done anything to this throwback hick to violate his speech so freedom of speech has NEVER been violated in this case. You are not free to violate whatever rules your employer has in place. Now a days most, if not all, large companies have rules in place where you cannot disparage others in your work place. A&E decided he violated their corporate rules, and most other companies would probably agree. I challenge any of you defenders to go into your workplace and start saying how you feel about gays and their rights and see how long you keep your job or end up getting sued. If I worked for A&E, I would have found a gay person who worked on the set to sue for workplace bullying and not only would this guy be off the air, but his pockets would be a lot lighter as he would surely lose a workplace discrimination case. Secondly, considering this guy is a sheriff and should know the law, how exactly and what law would you use to keep people out of your county. This is the USA and as far as I know I can go wherever I want and this "sheriff" can't do a thing about it.
