Joan Rivers storms out of CNN interview
Comedienne Joan Rivers sat down with Fredricka Whitfield to discuss her new book, but stormed out before the interview was over. Watch to see what made Joan Rivers so upset.

Ms. Whitfield, when will you learn to accept the results you cause? You are not the victim as you portrayed. Good for Ms. Rivers for walking out. You, you company and other 'news' expect to be respected yet will not give respect. Common courtesies is what true life is all about.
Good for Joan Rivers for walking out. Ms. Whitfield had no interest to hear what Ms. Rivers was saying from the beginning. She just wanted to stick in a knife and turn the blade. I doubt anyone really knows your name except from this report. You were just trying to make a name for yourself. Good luck with your career and learn some interview skills.
The "Funny " thing is everything the interviewer said was true. Joan does use humor at the expense of others and has through her entire career, and that is fine, just own it. A lot of her comedy comes from making light of others choices-( fashion) mistakes -(politics) affairs -( personal life) and so on. If you are going to make fun of bad things that happen to people, just own up to it.
If you are going to wear fur as a celebrity, know that you will get knocked for it, own it. Don't say that other celebrities should be able to take your criticism, that you make your living from, and then not be able to stand in the darkness of the shadow you cast.
If you are going to say things that upset people, (like calling the President of the United States Gay, and making cracks about his wife,) and cause controversy, it's cool, just own it and don't get righteous and indignant when people point it out to you, just own it.
Here's a little humor of my own, If Joan Rivers gets any more plastic surgery, people are going to mistake her for Michael Jackson!
Agree, never heard of this interviewer before today and will immediately forget that she ever existed. If this was meant for ratings, then I'll never watch her show. Its called baiting and then playing the victim. Come on, really? Turning the knife with that big smile on her face. The whole country loves Joan Rivers and come to think of it... the Prez may well be gay! CNN continues to hire these people after firing the same kind... making the same mistake over and over again

Ms. Rivers would have been better served by continuing the interview, so she could have more completely revealed Fredricka Whitfield's hypocritical and biased agenda. Ms. Whitfield's derisive line of questioning, and continual castigation of her guest were obvious. I would venture to guess that Ms. River's recent quip about the First Lady being a "tranny" is what sparked Ms. Whitfield's ire. if Ms. Whitfield is so concerned with comedians hurting people's feelings, then she needs to castigate the entire lot. It seems in today's world, it's politically and socially incorrect to poke fun at, or mock anything left of center, and God forbid you wear fur, eat meat, or criticize a celebrity's frock. Politically biased, and selectively applied criticism is tiresome and transparent.
Good for Joan Rivers! This interviewer was terrible, whoever she was, I'll never watch her, thankfully and I'll never watch CNN again.
What a set-up! First she's there to sell her book, "MAD Diva", then she has these prepared questions for the moderator, then she is set-up to "act" indignant and walk off the set. With her catfish, botox face, it's easy to keep a "straight face".
So they bully can't take it when the tables are turned on her!
I can't believe Joan Rivers is defending wearing a fifteen-year old fur. UNLESS....someone can clarify for me her statement. Ms. Rivers said words to the effect that animal (fur referenced) was killed fifteen years ago; what did she mean by that? Was she alluding to the passage of time with respect to the animals demise? Or was she actually referring to the fact that she has a fifteen year old garment that, if she doesn't wear it, was used specifically for this particular cover shoot and the fact that as an aged garment its relevance is moot? Or is it as one CNN guest analyst put it 'an issue of too much botox and concomitant collection of funds to continue the Joan Rivers pursuit of perfection?
Joan was right. The interview was designed to put her the defense. Glad she walked out
Fredricka can only hope to have a career like Joan Rivers. All Fredricka managed to do with that interview was to make her smirking self look like a tight a$$ with no sense of humor.
I agreed with Ms. Whitfield's characterization of Joan Rivers however that is Rivers' humor. There's nothing new about that. She used to do quite a job on Elizabeth Taylor. The problem was that there were no questions. Whitfield kept making observations that were quite negative. Instead of placing these observations

Instead of placing her observations in the context of comedy (which is often scathing) she took it at face value as if Joan was simply a newscaster making comments. No question about it, some of her humor is off-putting....I remember the 911 joke about some wives had to be happy their husbands weren't coming home that night. And there probably were.
She's been around for 50 years and deserves the respect of an interviewer who knows her history as a comedian. Quite frankly, it wasn't Whitfield's job to be commentator and editor, her job (she should watch Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon) was to find out from Joan what her motivations are, how comedy has changed, how her comedy has changed, etc. Whitfield kept going back to Rivers being offensive, controversial....ok.. yeh...and? Whitfield didn't do her homework and Rivers deserves being interviewed by someone who does her homework.
Well, your host was terrible so I don't feel bad about this at all.
Fredricka you have no sense of humour. I will go further you might be an anti-Semitic person. Terrible interviewer. Very disappointing to watch a class interview with Ms. Rivers. You can work your whole life and will never will reach the path of Ms. Rivers. Like other CNN reporters will be soon gone and some one will replace you and you become a forgotten reporter. Ms. Rivers did well leaving your shabby show. Laugh is what is missing in this entire world and when we witness so many atrocities in the world humour brings some what peace in our souls. Whitfield is clueless as an interviewer. You're doing a puff piece. Joan's a comedian selling a book – You think she wants to get hijacked by a Holier-Than-Thou reporter!
Then Whitfield shows her own ignorance – She thought Joan was KIDDING? If this Whitfiend can't read people or their reactions she doesn't belong on network TV.
The problem is that Fredericka Whitfield kept beating a dead horse. Rivers gave an honest response to Ms. Whitfield’s criticism, but Whitfield simply could not let it go. As an on-camera talent, you have to take ownership of your interview. Whitfield lost all control when she failed to pick up obvious cues that Rivers felt like she was being ambushed by TMZ.
Joan Rivers can dish it out but can't take it. Her whole schtick is belittling others. So someone gets on her a$s a little and she storms out.

Joan can dish it out – without remorse – but she can't take it. She may on occasion be funny (to some) but she is consistently hurtful and there isn't a joke in the world that gives someone who's 'been thru hell' a vacation, particularly when it's at their expense.

This interviewer...Is she new to the business? Does she think her line of negative questioning was interesting? This interview seemed mechanical and too methodical.

Fredricka Whitfield is an embarassment! So many other well-qualified journalists would love to have–deserve to have her job following the interview with Joan Rivers. Must be a strategic ploy on CNN's part to see how many other interview subjects will walk out based on Whitfield's brand of unprofessionalism.

It used to be TV interviewers had intelligent and insight. Now they are stu[id and try to "push the envelope" to go for ratings. No wonder CNN viewership continues to decline. Instead of this "interview" with Joan Rivers, why not cover real news like The IRS actions, rising gas prices, etc.?
CNN has gone to crap. This is the worst interview I have ever seen. That wasn't journalism. That was an all out attack on Joan Rivers. Goodbye Fredricka. If you haven't already been fired, you should be. That fake smile, laugh and "m-hms" made me sick. I don't think TMZ would or should even consider adding you to their payroll, as even they would give Joan the respect she deserves as an artist of 50 years. Joan Rivers was hardly attacked. Her comedy at the expense of others has been sick for years and people say leave her alone because she is a comedian. Joan RIvers always was and still is the bully.
Unfortunately a lot of people diminish others by making personal jokes. Then they defend themselves by saying others like their humor, in other words, others who put people down to make themselves feel better. Joan is just another very insecure person who feels vindicated damaging others because there are like minded individuals who are thrilled that Joan is just as emotionally abusive as they are.
They form a large group of emotionally sick children who, while they are adults, never really grew up.
No one can reason with them because they are to fragile. So they go on revisiting the abusive traits they learned as children.
The only way to stay on Joan's good side is to tell her that she is even more wonderful than she already thinks she is.

I'm surprised Joan was so patient waiting to respond to the combined questions / comments by the Fred. Joan clearly saw the direction of the interview and her parting comments were appropriate. In her long career she can probably count on hands the times she has walked out of an interview. If I were CNN I would bury this story.
I am not a huge Joan Rivers fan, but I do appreciate her as a comedy icon. She deserved more respect than this rude "interview."

Obviously Ms. Whitfield doesn't understand humor and shouldn't be the one to do an interview of a comedian. Most comedians take extreme situations and find some humor in it. It's not for everyone, but some people see the humor. Yes it can be at others expense, but not everything is politically correct. If you look at most jokes, it's the same. Ms. Whitfield, I hope you find something of humor in your life. Perhaps you can look at your line of questions for Ms. Rivers and see how funny you were in asking your pointed questions. Lighten up!

Sorry, but this wasn't journalism. Whitfield presented her own opinion of Joan's humor as fact. She should have framed the issue by saying, "How do you respond to critics who say that your humor is mean spirited?" That's what a real journalist would have done. Furthermore, the snarky smirk and syrupy smile were totally unprofessional.

I think being mean to others and saying its comedy as an excuse is wrong. How many people has Joan put in defensive positions? Interviewer wanted to turn a hohum book interview into something bigger. She comes across as smug and arrogant. Move her down to interviewing Dr Seuss for his next book.
What was the purpose/reason for the interview? To promote Joan's book? If so, the 'interviewer' did a TERRIBLE job! The interviewer was snide and laughing (smiling) the whole time - and she couldn't tell Joan wasn't kidding? Isn't the purpose of an 'interview' to ask a GOOD, OPEN question that will elicit information from the interviewee. Then, shut up (and act serious - not goofy with smiles) - and LISTEN. Facials and body language of the interviewer was offensive.
I agree with Joan - the interview was more an interrogation/accusatory in tone so I am glad Joan walked off. I would've also. Never seen this interviewer before - and I think CNN should dump her. The interview is about the one being interviewed, not the interviewer (don't know her name - never saw her and never want to see her again.)
Joan needs to understand this was not an E! interview with easy, fluffy showbiz questions. CNN is a news network and they ask about things that are newsworthy and may not always be positive.
I don't blame Ms. Rivers for walking out. The interview came across negative and attacking, although lightly, but none the less. If the purpose of the interview was to talk about her new book, where were the questions and discussion on it? So disappointed in CNN for this.

It was a painful interview to watch, mainly because Whitfield came across as really phoney, tone-deaf and condescending. Ask those questions, sure, but listen to the answers. And don't act like you're covering new ground and getting some sort of scoop. Although, to be fair, with Rivers unable to show human facial expressions, she might not have realized the interview was going south - or else it was the goal from the start...

Perhaps Joan Rivers is old enough to remember a time when hosts were respectful, intelligent and engaging instead of what they have become, which is inflammatory and argumentative. This antagonistic back and forth is annoying to watch and it is so insidious at this point, that it's becoming how we relate to each other in everyday life. It makes me sad to see it in real life, but I especially miss the days when you could expect a finer example from a news professional. I'm about 1/2 as old as Joan and I sorely miss the respect I grew up seeing in interviews on news stations. As the tough questions, RESPECTFULLY, of a politician and remain unbiased in your response. Ask the tough questions of a comedian? Really?! Good for Joan walking out. I'm with her 100%.
Ms. Whitfield is a perfect example of a self centered, egomaniac. Rather than give a sincere apology for the error of her ways, she chose to defend herself again in her news report. She looked like a MORE arrogant person the second time around. She had her chance to save face, but she chose the wrong answer. Shame on her, shame on CNN.

Your host was in the wrong and I am glad that Joan Rivers walked off. Rivers is an ENTERTAINER – a COMEDIENNE! Get over it. Ms. Whitfield's interview was terrible. She wasn't prepared at all. If this was supposed to be about the book, where was her homework? Did she read the book? Aren't journalists supposed to do at least some research before they ask questions? I hardly ever watch CNN. Only reason I watched this is because they had such a icon like Joan Rivers. But reporters/interviewers like this remind me of why I don't watch it. She is there to promote her book. But this lady comes off as so condescending and attacking the person she is. A good interviewer would have seen this going sour and changed the direction of where it was going. In the end she had a chance to apologize and just chose to ask if she was being serious? This interviewer is so insensitive and presents herself in this real privileged position where she cannot stop and reflect (on camera) how much of an ass she made of herself while on camera. Let's tally that up, she made fun of women who were kidnapped, raped, and abused for a decade, an infant who may have trashy parents but hasn't even the ability to talk or stand up for herself, a very talented singer because of her physical appearance (that alone deserves a side-eye because she really shouldn't be questioning anyone's physical appearance at all) and the president and first lady of the United States. Anyone thats educated and understand American culture and humor knows how to respect a guest, laugh with then and not at them, and have to maturity to understand the subtle nuances of what comedians like Rivers are doing in promoting a book. With 'newsertainment', it's SO important to have an anchor with enough of a personality to be able to go with the flow, who can find out info that's interesting, while also putting on a show themselves. Brooke Baldwin and Don Lemon are interesting to watch, and Sunny Hostin was great when she was co-anchoring at night over at ABC. Fredericka's okay, but she's always been a bit 'phony nice' while passing judgment on people, and she doesn't have the most dynamic personality, so she's never been a fave.
Am a bit surprised to see her in the middle of a firestorm, giving her bland personality. I really like Joan Rivers and don't disagree with anything she said, but at the same time, it doesn't feel like Fredericka really did anything too out of line.
That interviewer, Freddie something, was beyond rude and unprofessional. Her passive aggressive stance was intended to push buttons, not extract information from Ms Rivers. This was a very disappointing and sad interview. For someone who has won awards for journalism, Fredericka Whitfield came across as pretty arrogant and fake. The forced smile and fake intonation was obvious during the entire interview. The interview tactics - a compliment followed by an aggressive question which was then followed by another compliment and another aggressive question - make the subject feel comfortable then attack, then calm then down with another compliment and then attack again.
Too many fan bots for Joan here. I think Ms Whitfield was within bounds for book interview. Maybe the intro and setup went on a bit long, then Joan gets impatient while hear the word "mean" and denies she ever strays into edgy or controversial territory... she should have just owned the good along with the bad as all part of her comedy oeuvre. Instead, she takes the fur reference (totally valid as controversial to some) with great offense. Joan's ego showed an ugly side, never a good thing for a comedian.
Good for Ms. Whitfield. Some people will laugh at a mob attack or a deformed person walking down the street (I've seen it). Just because someone laughs, it doesn't mean it"s funny. Joan can't take it but she can dish it. I've heard her call people morons for not thinking her garbage is funny. You can hear her insults in any school. What a horrible interview! Invite a guest on to talk about a new book and attack that guest. Where is the professionalism for the interviewer? The nasty looks were unprofessional. Continuing to try to take the conversation down an avenue that the guest stated clearly was to put her on the defense was unprofessional. Not being able to pay attention to body language and tone to tell that Joan was getting angry was unprofessional. The little video tidbit after was unprofessional. CNN should be ashamed to have this interviewer associated with the company.

I am a big fan of CNN news–but this interview was horrible. Joan Rivers has made millions of people laugh and this interview is just plain "bad" journalism. The trend on the part of interviewers to pack as much presumptive allegation as possible into blatant leading questions is unfair to their subjects, and just poor journalism. (Charlie Rose is also frequently guilty of this.) I don't want hearsay testimony from the questioner, I want to hear a story from the subject - his or her version of the FACTS, not a justification for their very existence. I"LL decide who the good and bad guys are, if you don't mind.
I doubt this was a publicity stunt as very few people watch CNN. I saw this on a real news channel and was thrilled that Joan walked off the set. That wasn't an interview at all. I heard no questions being asked, rather one indictment after another. It felt uncomfortable just watching it. I think people are interested in hard-nosed investigations of serious issues...not the grilling of a comedienne who's selling a book. Cripes, I see more pertinent news in your nightly repeats of Forensic Files. And just an FYI...listening to Costello or Banfield for five minutes could lobotomize an entire audience, so you might want to post a warning during their programs.

Ms Whitfield started in interview intending to insult Ms Rivers. I think CNN should leave the Real interviews for the grown ups. Maybe they can let Ms Whitfield read the Weather TelePrompter. I don't think she can screw that up!
I am just devastated by the untimely death of the iconic Joan Rivers and have been watching the reviews of her life and was curious about seeing this BS of an interview. I hope that Ms. Whitfield has been fired from CNN as that was nothing but a passive aggressive attack on a living legend who had earned the right and had the courage to say what other people think and yes, she liked to shock people as well as make them laugh and nobody could do it better...Joan was one of a kind and someone who worked hard to achieve her dreams. I have observed that Joan was generous to a fault and overcame so many obstacles to get where she was. Nothing was handed to her and young people today who expect fame and fortune to come overnight should take a lesson from the Mad Diva who I hope knew how loved she was and how much she will be missed. Whitfield thought she could make a name for herself but she will only be remembered as a smug bully and with great destain. I stopped watching CNN long time ago. No wonder.

It's about time someone tell these hypocrites that they are just that ... hypocrites! I'm glad Ms. Rivers was wearing a fur ensemble on her book cover. I refuse to use the term "real fur" or "faux fur" because there is no such thing as artificial fur, if it's not "real", then it's made from some man-made fiber and shouldn't even be compared to fur (more like "lining"!). Great counter-point Ms. Rivers made regarding the interviewer wearing leather shoes and I don't blame her for walking out because once Ms. Rivers determined that this person interviewing her is a fraud and fake who probably didn't care one bit about the substance of her book because of stupid questions like the one posed, she came to the conclusion that the interview wasn't going to go the way she had been told it would, so she split! Oh and this person needs to go back to acting school (since she's obviously not a journalist), because her trying to act like she was clueless frankly was insulting.

I only learned of this interview yesterday and watched it. Frederica who??? Joan Rivers did make fun of others and more importantly, herself. She was also great at self-deprecating humor and you missed that. I am grieving her loss in a way that surprises me, and watching old clips of her. She could really make me laugh. Yesterday I bought Joan's r book, which I also learned about with the interview. "Freddie" was a jerk, her smirking and tone of voice were snarky and hateful, and it makes me so much sadder that it happened towards the end of Joan's life. I thought Joan's appearance on Letterman was perfect. Why does CNN allow such hateful interviewing of someone who brings so much laughter in the world? Fire "Freddie", what a classless act.
