Ms. Whitfield, when will you learn to accept the results you cause? You are not the victim as you portrayed. Good for Ms. Rivers for walking out. You, you company and other 'news' expect to be respected yet will not give respect. Common courtesies is what true life is all about.

Good for Joan Rivers for walking out. Ms. Whitfield had no interest to hear what Ms. Rivers was saying from the beginning. She just wanted to stick in a knife and turn the blade. I doubt anyone really knows your name except from this report. You were just trying to make a name for yourself. Good luck with your career and learn some interview skills.

The "Funny " thing is everything the interviewer said was true. Joan does use humor at the expense of others and has through her entire career, and that is fine, just own it. A lot of her comedy comes from making light of others choices-( fashion) mistakes -(politics) affairs -( personal life) and so on. If you are going to make fun of bad things that happen to people, just own up to it.
If you are going to wear fur as a celebrity, know that you will get knocked for it, own it. Don't say that other celebrities should be able to take your criticism, that you make your living from, and then not be able to stand in the darkness of the shadow you cast.

If you are going to say things that upset people, (like calling the President of the United States Gay, and making cracks about his wife,) and cause controversy, it's cool, just own it and don't get righteous and indignant when people point it out to you, just own it.

Here's a little humor of my own, If Joan Rivers gets any more plastic surgery, people are going to mistake her for Michael Jackson!

Agree, never heard of this interviewer before today and will immediately forget that she ever existed. If this was meant for ratings, then I'll never watch her show. Its called baiting and then playing the victim. Come on, really? Turning the knife with that big smile on her face. The whole country loves Joan Rivers and come to think of it... the Prez may well be gay! CNN continues to hire these people after firing the same kind... making the same mistake over and over again

The only one mean here was the interviewer...

Ms. Rivers would have been better served by continuing the interview, so she could have more completely revealed Fredricka Whitfield's hypocritical and biased agenda. Ms. Whitfield's derisive line of questioning, and continual castigation of her guest were obvious. I would venture to guess that Ms. River's recent quip about the First Lady being a "tranny" is what sparked Ms. Whitfield's ire. if Ms. Whitfield is so concerned with comedians hurting people's feelings, then she needs to castigate the entire lot. It seems in today's world, it's politically and socially incorrect to poke fun at, or mock anything left of center, and God forbid you wear fur, eat meat, or criticize a celebrity's frock. Politically biased, and selectively applied criticism is tiresome and transparent.

Good for Joan Rivers! This interviewer was terrible, whoever she was, I'll never watch her, thankfully and I'll never watch CNN again.

What a set-up! First she's there to sell her book, "MAD Diva", then she has these prepared questions for the moderator, then she is set-up to "act" indignant and walk off the set. With her catfish, botox face, it's easy to keep a "straight face".

So they bully can't take it when the tables are turned on her!

I can't believe Joan Rivers is defending wearing a fifteen-year old fur. UNLESS....someone can clarify for me her statement. Ms. Rivers said words to the effect that animal (fur referenced) was killed fifteen years ago; what did she mean by that? Was she alluding to the passage of time with respect to the animals demise? Or was she actually referring to the fact that she has a fifteen year old garment that, if she doesn't wear it, was used specifically for this particular cover shoot and the fact that as an aged garment its relevance is moot? Or is it as one CNN guest analyst put it 'an issue of too much botox and concomitant collection of funds to continue the Joan Rivers pursuit of perfection?

Joan was right. The interview was designed to put her the defense. Glad she walked out

Fredricka can only hope to have a career like Joan Rivers. All Fredricka managed to do with that interview was to make her smirking self look like a tight a$$ with no sense of humor.

  13. manhattanjewess

I agreed with Ms. Whitfield's characterization of Joan Rivers however that is Rivers' humor. There's nothing new about that. She used to do quite a job on Elizabeth Taylor. The problem was that there were no questions. Whitfield kept making observations that were quite negative. Instead of placing these observations

    July 5, 2014 at 7:04 pm |
  14. manhattanjewess

Instead of placing her observations in the context of comedy (which is often scathing) she took it at face value as if Joan was simply a newscaster making comments. No question about it, some of her humor is off-putting....I remember the 911 joke about some wives had to be happy their husbands weren't coming home that night. And there probably were.

She's been around for 50 years and deserves the respect of an interviewer who knows her history as a comedian. Quite frankly, it wasn't Whitfield's job to be commentator and editor, her job (she should watch Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon) was to find out from Joan what her motivations are, how comedy has changed, how her comedy has changed, etc. Whitfield kept going back to Rivers being offensive, controversial....ok.. yeh...and? Whitfield didn't do her homework and Rivers deserves being interviewed by someone who does her homework.

Well, your host was terrible so I don't feel bad about this at all.

Fredricka you have no sense of humour. I will go further you might be an anti-Semitic person. Terrible interviewer. Very disappointing to watch a class interview with Ms. Rivers. You can work your whole life and will never will reach the path of Ms. Rivers. Like other CNN reporters will be soon gone and some one will replace you and you become a forgotten reporter. Ms. Rivers did well leaving your shabby show. Laugh is what is missing in this entire world and when we witness so many atrocities in the world humour brings some what peace in our souls. Pls Fredricka get a real life darling... perhaps enrol in a social skills class somewhere in the UK Colleges.

  17. Billy

Whitfield is clueless as an interviewer. You're doing a puff piece. Joan's a comedian selling a book – You think she wants to get hijacked by a Holier-Than-Thou reporter!

Then Whitfield shows her own ignorance – She thought Joan was KIDDING? If this Whitfiend can't read people or their reactions she doesn't belong on network TV.

    July 5, 2014 at 7:35 pm |
  18. Matt

The problem is that Fredericka Whitfield kept beating a dead horse. Rivers gave an honest response to Ms. Whitfield’s criticism, but Whitfield simply could not let it go. As an on-camera talent, you have to take ownership of your interview. Whitfield lost all control when she failed to pick up obvious cues that Rivers felt like she was being ambushed by TMZ.

Joan Rivers can dish it out but can't take it. Her whole schtick is belittling others. So someone gets on her a$s a little and she storms out.

Joan Rivers has made a career out of cruelty disguised as "humor." She is a bully and I am glad Fredricka Whitfield stood up to her. I wish someone would finally make this nasty old lady shut up.

    July 5, 2014 at 7:53 pm |
  22. Mike Ruelle

Right on Erin! Joan Rivers hurts others so that she can afford her fur....she is old news in an old lady's stretched skin.

    July 5, 2014 at 8:02 pm |
  23. Max

I have no sympathy for Joan Rivers at all.
She has attacked and belittled people for years – in fact, she's made a career off of it
And yet, Joan Rivers seems to live in a glass house, where she can hurl insults at others but gets upset when this is pointed out.
She used to be vicious to Elizabeth Taylor about her middle age weight gain – ignoring the fact that Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most beautiful women of this century,
But Joan Rivers herself has had so much cosmetic surgery that she literally looks like a manequin.
I'm glad someone called this neurotic piece of work out on her hurtful behavior.
Joan Rivers is a terrible hypocrite and has been getting away with her nasty remarks and comments for too long.

Im not a Joan Rivers fan but she was right to walk off of interview...The interviewer was a jerk.

    July 5, 2014 at 8:17 pm |
  25. Sue

Thank you Fredricka for calling Joan Rivers out for who she is – it's IRONIC that she felt the interview was negative when the cornerstone of her jokes and show is about pointing out the negative.

Joan can dish it out – without remorse – but she can't take it. She may on occasion be funny (to some) but she is consistently hurtful and there isn't a joke in the world that gives someone who's 'been thru hell' a vacation, particularly when it's at their expense.

Amazing how a comedienne who makes a living by disparaging people should be so thin-skinned when it comes to herself. Talk about hypocrisy....

    July 5, 2014 at 8:29 pm |
  27. Robert Tubere

"Are you wearing leather shoes?" – brilliant, Ms Rivers. Time to tell these hypocrites off. You're right in walking off, you've graced the occasion enough.

  28. Danno

    Good for Joan.
This interviewer...Is she new to the business? Does she think her line of negative questioning was interesting? This interview seemed mechanical and too methodical.
This interview was more about reinforcing PC than exploring Joan Rivers.
Terrible waste of a Journalism degree.

Fredricka Whitfield is an embarassment! So many other well-qualified journalists would love to have–deserve to have her job following the interview with Joan Rivers. Whitfield's gestures were childish and disrespectful. Her responses were juvenile. Must be a strategic ploy on CNN's part to see how many other interview subjects will walk out based on Whitfield's brand of unprofessionalism.

Don't care for Joan Rivers......but Whitfield showed zero professionalism with her condescending smirks. She was totally disrespectful, unprofessional and dismissive. More appropriate in the "look-back" would have been for Whitfield to issue an apology for offending her guest than to pretend to be oblivious about her own behavior. How embarrassing for CNN.

Joan, I find some of your jokes to be tasteless, but you were spot on this time, You are funny, and you make people laugh, but the interview was designed to be against you. Fredrick's, I am so disappointed in you, you were one of my favorite anchors, but you caved to the classless producers,

    July 5, 2014 at 9:34 pm |
  37. giantslor

OK, I watched it and bravo Fredricka Whitfield! You have a new fan here. God forbid, a journalist doing her job! Joan Rivers can dish it out, but she can't take it. The percentage of people that find her funny is vanishingly small; alas, it is enough to sustain a career.

Look, it can't be PMS with Joan, she's way too old. She thinks she's funny. I think she's tragic. This self proclaimed fashion judge needs to judge herself. I think her facial plastic surgery not only stretched her skin tight but also her brain. I guess it's true that one cannot teach old dogs new tricks. Joan's new tricks to learn would be to not shout while in interview, and be kind to herself. She so sad a figure.

It used to be TV interviewers had intelligent and insight. Now they are stu[id and try to "push the envelope" to go for ratings. No wonder CNN viewership continues to decline. Instead of this "interview" with Joan Rivers, why not cover real news like The IRS actions, rising gas prices, etc.?

    July 5, 2014 at 10:46 pm |
  45. JL

CNN has gone to crap. This is the worst interview I have ever seen. That wasn't journalism. That was an all out attack on Joan Rivers. Goodbye Fredricka. If you haven't already been fired, you should be. That fake smile, laugh and "m-hms" made me sick. I don't think TMZ would or should even consider adding you to their payroll, as even they would give Joan the respect she deserves as an artist of 50 years. Fredricka and CNN should have made a public apology to Joan immediately. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Aren't you journalists supposed to be supportive of free speech? Isn't that what Joan does in her comedy? That's what comedy is. She is not a bully or unique in that sense. Every comedian does it. The only reason you are getting on Joan for her style of comedy is because she is a woman. I don't hear any of you complaining about what the men say... Food for thought... CNN. I won't be watching or reading your news articles ever again. Anderson, please jump ship and go to a real news organization. I will miss you.

She came to promote her book; I wouldn't have known about it if this incident didn't happen, and it's all over the internet now, so this DRAMA is a brilliant move....
( I like Fredricka; she was just reminding Joan Rivers of her acts and introducing her to the rest of her viewers who don't normally watch Joan Rivers' shows/ acts... )

Joan Rivers was hardly attacked. Her comedy at the expense of others has been sick for years and people say leave her alone because she is a comedian. Joan RIvers always was and still is the bully.

    July 5, 2014 at 11:10 pm |
  48. Allan

Unfortunately a lot of people diminish others by making personal jokes. Then they defend themselves by saying others like their humor, in other words, others who put people down to make themselves feel better. Joan is just another very insecure person who feels vindicated damaging others because there are like minded individuals who are thrilled that Joan is just as emotionally abusive as they are.

They form a large group of emotionally sick children who, while they are adults, never really grew up.

No one can reason with them because they are to fragile. So they go on revisiting the abusive traits they learned as children.

The only way to stay on Joan's good side is to tell her that she is even more wonderful than she already thinks she is.

Rivers is a loudmouth, hypocritical mean person. Someone points this out to her out to her and she gets all whiny and storms off!! Talk about dishing it out and not being able to take it. Rivers time is done, she should shut up and walk off into the sunset.

Joan Rivers is a disgusting creature who trashes others, but can't take the same, what a pathetic person she is. I think anyone who watches that parasite bully are just as bad

  52. FlimFlam

Joan Rivers makes jokes at other people's expense which is sad. She made millions doing it, which means people enjoyed watching her do it, that is even sadder. Joan couldn't handle this young reporter which says even less about Joan's character. The reporter behaved like a high school brat; even though I don't care for Joan River's character, the reporter wasn't much better. This is what "news" has turned into, 24 hour speculation and celebrity drama. SAD.

The number of anti-CNN comments in favour of Joan Rivers here is too obvious. Someone should tell the 2nd team Hollywood PR machine she employs that it's soooo 2000s to be using flacks to post comments.

    July 6, 2014 at 12:59 am |
  61. Susan

I'm surprised Joan was so patient waiting to respond to the combined questions / comments by the Fred. Joan clearly saw the direction of the interview and her parting comments were appropriate. In her long career she can probably count on hands the times she has walked out of an interview. If I were CNN I would bury this story.

Obviously Ms. Whitfield doesn't understand humor and shouldn't be the one to do an interview of a comedian. Most comedians take extreme situations and find some humor in it. It's not for everyone, but some people see the humor. Yes it can be at others expense, but not everything is politically correct. If you look at most jokes, it's the same. Ms. Whitfield, I hope you find something of humor in your life. Perhaps you can look at your line of questions for Ms. Rivers and see how funny you were in asking your pointed questions. Lighten up!

As Joan would say, "Grow up!" Like Don Rickles, she's an insult comic. If you don't like/get it, then that's your problem. Michelle is a tranny? That's so over-the-top that only humorless prigs - and there are some here - would be offended. Rivers was there to promote her book, not to be fair game. She was right to walk off. At 81, her time is too precious to waste on garbage like Whitfield.

    July 6, 2014 at 1:40 am |
  69. bob

I am not so sure why Joan Rivers got so mad, the questions she was asked was not offensive at all but sometimes her humor is. Ms Whitfield did a fine job, did not see anything wrong with the interview.

  70. Julie B.

Joan Rivers has been making millions for years with cruelty and viciousness, and now, she's simply stayed too long at the fair. She's become a joke, and either doesn't realize it, or her massive ego is too big to care. She writes a lame celebrity book, and then thinks she should be allowed to promote it free of charge, with no honest questions. A lot of people here are truly ignorant, not to have heard of Frederika Whitfield. Do you live under a rock, somewhere? You may not have liked her style, but she's a long-time big deal at CNN, and her job is to interview, not to promote has-been divas like Joan Rivers. There have already been thousands of jokes about her vanity, her rudeness, and hideous plastic surgeries, but how about a few jokes about the no-talent daughter that she's been shoving down peoples' throats for years?

    July 6, 2014 at 2:18 am |

Yes. Time to retire Joan – with a little bit of class.
Whitfield was a professional in all of the questions that she asked. You acted like a amateur eghit-year old.

Another CNN's arrogant – idiotic interviewer. Look at her mocking face. (Piers Morgan and Anderson Cooper + this one) What does CNN think? They think they have the right to do anything and whatever they think is right? Psuedo intellectuals. Arrogant and lack of content will put CNN out of business soon.

  75. Susan

Sorry, but this wasn't journalism. Whitfield presented her own opinion of Joan's humor as fact. She should have framed the issue by saying, "How do you respond to critics who say that your humor is mean spirited?" That's what a real journalist would have done. Furthermore, the snarky smirk and syrupy smile were totally unprofessional.

Joan is 81 years old and has been a successful comic for 50 years. She deserved better and was smart to walk out.

I think being mean to others and saying its comedy as an excuse is wrong. How many people has Joan put in defensive positions? Being able to dish on others faux pas and then dismissive of the hurt you've caused isn't OK. I hope book sales are hurt but realize this was probably a stunt to promote Joan's book.

The interviewer played right into Joan's hand. The whole thing feels staged. Shame the interviewer didn't pick up on the ploy.

Kudos to the interviewer it's about time someone called her on her BS this woman has made a living over hurting other people she thinks people who make money a lot of money have no feelings and their feelings are not hurt what's wrong with her? These people she makes fun of have families have children have moms and dads this does hurt her words do hurt them what is truly funny if she can dish it out but she cannot take it

What was the purpose/reason for the interview? To promote Joan's book? If so, the 'interviewer' did a TERRIBLE job! The interviewer was snide and laughing (smiling) the whole time - and she couldn't tell Joan wasn't kidding? Isn't the purpose of an 'interview' to ask a GOOD, OPEN question that will elicit information from the interviewee. Then, shut up (and act serious - not goofy with smiles) - and LISTEN. Facials and body language of the interviewer was offensive.

I agree with Joan - the interview was more an interrogation/accusatory in tone so I am glad Joan walked off. I would've also. Never seen this interviewer before - and I think CNN should dump her. The interview is about the one being interviewed, not the interviewer (don't know her name - never saw her and never want to see her again.)

Joan needs to understand this was not an E! interview with easy, fluffy showbiz questions. CNN is a news network and they ask about things that are newsworthy and may not always be positive.

I don't blame Ms. Rivers for walking out. The interview came across negative and attacking, although lightly, but none the less. If the purpose of the interview was to talk about her new book, where were the questions and discussion on it? So disappointed in CNN for this.

Whitfield should be fired...she was completely unprofessional. She is an embarrasment to CNN. Whitfield owes Rivers a sincere apology.

Whitfield did a good interview. Joan Rivers lost it and her sense of humor. Perhaps with all the plastic surgery that Joan Rivers has had it's putting extra pressure on her brain to the point where she can't think clearly any more.

Whitfield is a laughing hyena, without a hyena's credentials. CNN shame for giving her a forum. Jumped up weather girl with no situational awareness or respect for a guest. Journalist???? NOT

It was a painful interview to watch, mainly because Whitfield came across as really phoney, tone-deaf and condescending. Ask those questions, sure, but listen to the answers. And don't act like you're covering new ground and getting some sort of scoop. Although, to be fair, with Rivers unable to show human facial expressions, she might not have realized the interview was going south - or else it was the goal from the start...

Perhaps Joan Rivers is old enough to remember a time when hosts were respectful, intelligent and engaging instead of what they have become, which is inflammatory and argumentative. This antagonistic back and forth is annoying to watch and it is so insidious at this point, that it's becoming how we relate to each other in everyday life. It makes me sad to see it in real life, but I especially miss the days when you could expect a finer example from a news professional. I'm about 1/2 as old as Joan and I sorely miss the respect I grew up seeing in interviews on news stations. As the tough questions, RESPECTFULLY, of a politician and remain unbiased in your response. Ask the tough questions of a comedian? Really?! Good for Joan walking out. I'm with her 100%.

Ms. Whitfield is a perfect example of a self centered, egomaniac. Rather than give a sincere apology for the error of her ways, she chose to defend herself again in her news report. She looked like a MORE arrogant person the second time around. She had her chance to save face, but she chose the wrong answer. Shame on her, shame on CNN.

Wow if you are going to interview a veteran comedian you should show respect! Joan Rivers is a amazing comedian. Like a skit on Saturday Night Live, you should consider it a compliment if you are critiqued by Joan. Is she harsh? Yep! Funny...FOR SURE!!! We all need to laugh more:)

I'm proud of Fredricka for calling Joan out on all of the ugly things that she's said at the expense of others. It's disgusting to see someone that can dish it, but can't take it. Joan is a tacky, low-class hypocrite and does not deserve any respect.

  94. John Woodsworth

Yes, Joan Rivers is known for her humour, funny... sarcastic, abrasive, who cares? She has been interviewed about her comedy over and over and over again. This was supposed to be about the book. The interviewer was not interviewing, in my opinion.

What a dope this Fredericka Whitfield is. Just another typical bubble headed moron, mental midget, ignorant so called journalist. What a silly little grind she wears as if she has a clue what she is talking about. CNN really knows how to pick the true dumb azz'es and put them on air. That is why nobody watches CNN and haven' t in years and years lol. CNN The Clown News

  96. matthewstephenbrown

This is no different than Erin Burnett attacking Paul Bremmer (who should have stormed out). CNN's new interview format seems to be to personally attack in an attempt to discredit anyone they interview that is conservative. Score 1 for Joan Rivers, 0 for the bimbot.

  97. Mabyn

Your host was in the wrong and I am glad that Joan Rivers walked off. Rivers is an ENTERTAINER – a COMEDIENNE! Get over it. It was a painful, embarrassing (for the host) interview to watch... sort of like a car wreck. She either doesn't like Mrs. Rivers or she lacks the professional skills to interview someone like that.

Like others, what was the purpose of the interview? To grill this successful woman? Job successfully done. To inform and promote her book? TERRIBLE JOB. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

    July 6, 2014 at 2:33 pm |
  98. Debra

Ms. Whitfield's interview was terrible. She wasn't prepared at all. If this was supposed to be about the book, where was her homework? Did she read the book? Aren't journalists supposed to do at least some research before they ask questions? Ms. Whitfield isn't Barbara Walters, that's for sure, or Oprah – they would never ask such dumb questions, seriously! These questions had nothing to do with the book or with anything. They were just innuendo and personal accusations about character. How would anyone respond when attacked like that, if you were called "mean", etc. Seriously, this is journalism – CNN???

    July 6, 2014 at 2:42 pm |
  99. David

I hardly ever watch CNN. Only reason I watched this is because they had such a icon like Joan Rivers. But reporters/interviewers like this remind me of why I don't watch it. She is there to promote her book. But this lady comes off as so condescending and attacking the person she is. A good interviewer would have seen this going sour and changed the direction of where it was going. In the end she had a chance to apologize and just chose to ask if she was being serious? Just like a child, thought she didn't do anything wrong and trying to justify the things she said instead of saying a simple apology.

    July 6, 2014 at 3:03 pm |

Dish it out but can't take it, Joan? I think Joan seems like maybe she's losing it a little. She's made a career out of being mean to others, she should have a much thicker skin when asked about it.

    July 6, 2014 at 3:21 pm |
  101. Adam

Mrs. Whitfield, why were you so antagonistic toward Mrs. Rivers? You asked her questions that DID put her on the defensive, all while wearing a sweet smile on your face. We've all seen that condescending and patronizing look before from those who try to kill with kindness – ever seen the movie Mean Girls? Why would you do that? Were you forced to stir up controversy by your producer? How did you think Mrs. Rivers wasn't being serious? You treated your guest terribly. Whether or not the commenters here like or dislike Mrs. Rivers, YOU, ma'am, were a disrespectful and demeaning hostess.

First, Joan Rivers used the meanest, vilest attacks as "humor." I rarely watch her because of that. The fact that she can't even take a slightest challenge to her "humor" shows she is totally classless. The one with class is CNN. The one without class is Joan Rivers.

    dear cnn,

would like to comment about the overwhelming situation about illegals coming into america. Hey CNN why don't yall try to the president into pulling out all of all soldiers fron iraq and afganistan and calling up the national guard stationing them on all of the broken places on the mexican-american border. Thats what i would do if i were president. I wouldn't worry about wher we were going to get our next cup of oil until we have all of those punctures in our fences and holes in the dessert it self. I htink until the president does this we will continue to have problems with our illegals coming over here and staeling our most precsious jobs. Mexico look out here comes the ARMY and we're going to jam it down your throats. take that mooo ch-cha's.

This interviewer is so insensitive and presents herself in this real privileged position where she cannot stop and reflect (on camera) how much of an ass she made of herself while on camera. Very childless and doesn't have a clue. Hooray for Ms. Rivers. Dump this interviewer – she simply doesn't get it!

    July 6, 2014 at 5:30 pm |

Joan Rivers was absolutely on target to walk away from this interviewer – the only way to respond to bad interviewing and someone who doesn't know what they are doing. . Seriously?! The interviewer "Fred" knew exactly what she was doing but I think it must have been the biggest deal in her career and the interviewer blew it big time. I was disgusted with the way JR was treated way before she walked off. Those questions were specifically written to be negative against JR – guess the interviewer throught JR wouldn't notice ????

Joan River's jokes include precious gems like...the three kidnapping victims of Ariel Castro had more space than she did in her living arrangement with her daughter, baby North West is ugly and needs a waxing, the POTUS is gay and the FLOTUS is a tranny, and ridiculing Adele because of her weight. Let's tally that up, she made fun of women who were kidnapped, raped, and abused for a decade, an infant who may have trashy parents but hasn't even the ability to talk or stand up for herself, a very talented singer because of her physical appearance (that alone deserves a side-eye because she really shouldn't be questioning anyone's physical appearance at all) and the president and first lady of the United States. These are only a few of the vicious things she has said and yet some of you are complaining that the interviewer should be fired for saying that some of the things she says are mean and pointing out her own hypocrisies. Welcome to the new America, where people can dish it but can't take it.

The Interviewer was egotistical, rude, talked over her guest – and challenged her time and again. Why would anyone want to be subject that kind of baloney. Bravo to Joan for having enough self respect to walk off. Interviewer is so dense she did not even "get it" that her guest was insulted and uncomfortable.

    Joan Rivers was right.

The interviewer was terrible and acted like a 12 year old child. I generally like Frederica or Fredricka or Fred or however her name is misspelled. I used to love Larry King. Anyone thats educated and understand American culture and humor knows how to respect a guest, laugh with then and not at them, and have to maturity to understand the subtle nuances of what comedians like Rivers are doing in promoting a book. But you dont bring on a respected entertainer and open your mouth and giggle at her like Fred did. She used to convince me she was an intelligent interviewer. Now she just sounds like some Univision or Fusion television anchor that thinks everything is a joke. Stupid. CNN needs to go back to the quality news organization it used to be back in the days of Kuwait invasion. You had serious and educated people back then. Now its turned into some low class latino youtube giggle fest where people with low intelligence who dont understand the world make fun of everything that appears before their eyes. Sad

Try Brooke Baldwin pr Bandfield next least they understand American culture

    July 6, 2014 at 8:08 pm |

Fredericka Whitfield showed her raw innate talent for insipid line of questioning – which is entirely in keeping with the very low caliber of "talent" on CNN news. Fredericka darling, you were a fool!

  119. Dorothy Nolan

Fredricka Whitfield was inappropriate in her handling of her "interview" with Joan Rivers. I was appalled & disgusted by Ms. Whitfield's behavior. This has turned me off completely from watching Ms. Whitefield in the future. Negative observations & insulting behavior does not an interview make. Bravo, Joan.

Fredricka: don't smile ear to ear when your sticking it to an 80 year old lady (Joan Rivers). Your not true–put your angry prison face on and bring the hate strong. There is nothing worse than a smiling backstabber.

Ms. Whitfield's performance was awful. She was condescending and appeared really fake, smirking throughout the interview. I would not watch her on CNN. A fool is what she is.

Wow Fredricka Whitfield you are way off. I hope CNN WILL FIRED HER!!!

    July 7, 2014 at 8:47 am |
  123. Jason Brook

Wow. Not only does Fredricka Whitfield lack the skills to interview a legendary performer like Joan Rivers, but she lacks the ability to save the interview once she starts to alienate and offend her own guest. CNN is really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. She just sits there and laughs with a big stupid ___ – eating grin on her face while her own guest is upset with her offensive interview. I have to wonder if CNN producers set her up to fail so they can get rid of her sooner. She clearly is a hack, and a lousy "journalist" . Joan Rivers may say offensive things in her comedy, but she's one of the hardest working entertainers there's ever been. She didn't get anything handed to her she made it on talent and hard work, she does shows almost every week at the Laurie Beechman and donates proceeds to charity, among all the other charity work she does. She was on a promotional book tour....this interview should have been about the book and not about whether or not Joan "hurts feelings" on Fashion Police or if people don't like that she's wearing fur on the cover. CNN: Where do you get these fools you call journalists?

    July 7, 2014 at 11:18 am |
  124. JACK

Joan Rivers has always shoveled her brand of manure humor out but when a little bit flies back into her face she can not take responsibility for the shovel. The only thing negative on that interview was Joan Rivers not being able to come back with some of her manure jokes instead she walks off in a huff. Fredricka, Joan Rivers is just an old woman with a short fuse that is getting shorter and I'm sure she already realizes how child like she looked by her actions.

Shame on Fredricka (whatever her name is)....Ms. Fredricka was unprofessional and acted like a childish Bimbo. Perhaps Ms. Fredricka should seek work that is more suited to her abilities. Joan Rivers the American actress, comedian, writer, producer and television host. She had an amazing career. She finished that show with dignity. No time for a disrespectful and unprofessional so called professional Fredricka. After seeing that on the news, left me with a disgust for that news channel. I saw her this morning on the news and I immediately changed the channel to watch another news channel.

Joan Rivers rebelled against political correctness before political correctness existed. "Don't you think you are a meanie? "Are you a hater?" "How do you like being a bully?"

What a bunch of wimps we have become when expressing what we are thinking has become a crime in the public's eye.

This Whitfield chick is obviously seeking revenge because of Ms. River's remarks about ouf "gay" President and his "tranny" wife, lol. Joan calls 'em as she sees 'em, and good for her for doing so.

Sorry, but I am with Ms. Rivers.

Joan Rivers has been around a long time, and everyone knows her humor.
Why have her on if you wanted to show your audience how "mean" she is???
Tell that producer that was talking into your ear (Fredricka) that he/she was way off base with this one.

I would greatly prefer that CNN cover NEWS. I watch news programs to find out what is going on in our country and the world. My TV time is limited. Joan Rivers does what she does, and it is not news. Come on CNN. Enough with the fluff!

With 'newsertainment', it's SO important to have an anchor with enough of a personality to be able to go with the flow, who can find out info that's interesting, while also putting on a show themselves. Brooke Baldwin and Don Lemon are interesting to watch, and Sunny Hostin was great when she was co-anchoring at night over at ABC. Fredericka's okay, but she's always been a bit 'phony nice' while passing judgment on people, and she doesn't have the most dynamic personality, so she's never been a fave.

Am a bit surprised to see her in the middle of a firestorm, giving her bland personality. I really like Joan Rivers and don't disagree with anything she said, but at the same time, it doesn't feel like Fredericka really did anything too out of line.

    July 7, 2014 at 7:14 pm |
  140. Theresa

That interviewer, Freddie something, was beyond rude and unprofessional. Her passive aggressive stance was intended to push buttons, not extract information from Ms Rivers. Question after question was confrontational and sensational. The eye rolling, the 'really, really?', the big fake smiles/smirks and head weaving... all obvious signs of a pi.s poor journalist. She should be embarrassed and she owes Ms. Rivers an apology. I hope 'freddie' is fired. She's a disgrace.

I was disgusted that Fredricka Whitfield attacked Joan Rivers. CNN, make her apologize or fire her. You will lose this viewer if FW doesn't sincerely apologize. As a nurse, I was waiting for Joan to have a heart attack or a stroke from the harassment! And, she is an ELDER and that is supposed to mean something, as in RESPECT YOUR ELDERS. In this context, FW may not have agreed with Joan Rivers, but the hostility of the attack on an elderly woman, followed by the phony "Aren't I cute" saccharin smiles were a huge TURNOFF for me re: FW's arrogant personality

    July 7, 2014 at 10:59 pm |
  146. JT

This was a very disappointing and sad interview. For someone who has won awards for journalism, Fredericka Whitfield came across as pretty arrogant and fake. The forced smile and fake intonation was obvious during the entire interview. The interview tactics - a compliment followed by an aggressive question which was then followed by another compliment and another aggressive question - make the subject feel comfortable then attack, then calm then down with another compliment and then attack again.

    July 8, 2014 at 1:39 am |
  147. Alex

Too many fan bots for Joan here. I think Ms Whitfield was within bounds for book interview. Maybe the intro and setup went on a bit long, then Joan gets impatient while hear the word "mean" and denies she ever strays into edgy or controversial territory... she should have just owned the good along with the bad as all part of her comedy oeuvre. Instead, she takes the fur reference (totally valid as controversial to some) with great offense. Joan's ego showed an ugly side, never a good thing for a comedian.

    July 8, 2014 at 3:13 am |
  148. Dee

Good for Ms. Whitfield. Some people will laugh at a mob attack or a deformed person walking down the street (I've seen it). Just because someone laughs, it doesn't mean it"s funny. Joan can't take it but she can dish it. I've heard her call people morons for not thinking her garbage is funny. You can hear her insults in any school. Hurl an insult and when you see someone is about to knock you out, you say its a joke.

    July 8, 2014 at 11:44 am |
  149. Janessa

Firstly Ms. Whitfield is not only a horrible argumentative interviewer; she is completely unprofessional. You would have thought she was grilling a political candidate not a elderly comedian promoting her latest book. Get over yourself Ms.W. If CNN is trying to promote 'edgey journalism' HUGE FAIL!!! This so called 'anchor' looks shocked Ms. Rivers walked off. There were 4 of us watching and we shouted a collective 'good for you' when Joan left. Whitfield is a tactless bully. Basically if you can't get a job in television you can always scrape the bottom of the barrel and go work at CNN. It used to be our favorite news channel. Now? Total embarrassment in broadcasting.

  152. Tonya

What a horrible interview! Invite a guest on to talk about a new book and attack that guest. Where is the professionalism for the interviewer? The nasty looks were unprofessional. Continuing to try to take the conversation down an avenue that the guest stated clearly was to put her on the defense was unprofessional. Not being able to pay attention to body language and tone to tell that Joan was getting angry was unprofessional. The little video tidbit after was unprofessional. CNN should be ashamed to have this interviewer associated with the company.

Is Joan Rivers politically incorrect? Yes, she is. So are almost all comedians. Like Joan said, if you can make someone laugh during their worst times, you give them a break.

I'm going to borrow one from Jeff Foxworthy.... Ms. Whitfield, here's your sign!

Joan was right. The whole interview was negative. Is it possible that Joan Rivers is a conservative being interviewed on a far-left wing news entertainment show?

I thought Ms. Whitfiled was courteous; she asked questions many poeple wanted answers to. Her questions gave Joan Rivers an opportunity to address her critics. For someone who has made a living over 50 years; making fun of the human suffering of others; she sure has a thin skin. She should really stop with the plastic surgery, how can anyone call themselves a fashion or style police; when they look like their wearing a leather mask.

I am a big fan of CNN news–but this interview was horrible. Joan Rivers has made millions of people laugh and this interview is just plain "bad" journalism. While I do believe sometimes lines are crossed, intent was never considered in this interview. With all the talented anchors on CNN, maybe Ms Whitfield can learn from one of them.

Way to go, Fredricka!! I'm so glad someone finally gave Joan Rivers a serving (not just a taste) of her own medicine! I won't watch E! anymore because of Rivers' insensitive and mean spirited commentary. I can't believe she still has a place on television. What a small sad woman she has become...she's just not funny anymore.

This was a stunt to get attention for her book. Joan is a great business woman but a terrible person and a bully.
Remember her acting out at an airport because a clerk didn't know who she was. She should be ashamed of herself and the way she acts ( and she only acts like that with people who can't answer her back = bully )

Hurray for Joan Rivers! I'm proud of her for walking out of
'such a moronic interview. CNN, you can do better by
hiring better people then Ms. Whitfield...and yes I plan
    on buying Joan Rivers book!

Fredricka whitfield which I have never heard of before this poor job she did as an interviewer to Joan Rivers. I do believe she needs to be placed in a room until she grows up some and learns her manners. Good for joan to walk out on her. Its a shame we did not to get into her book she was promoting. Will buy it anyway. But cnn better get a handle on this rude and immature girl. No wonder I love hln so much better. The people there act like grown ups.

Joan said the interview was all negative but that is Joan's business- being negative and putting people down and criticizing. I think Fredricka was perfectly within her bounds to ask about some of the controversial things she's said and ask for an explanation. Looks like Joan can't handle the confrontation of her own reflection. I think she should apologize and then if she wants to talk about something "positive" she needs to DO something positive.

Too hot in the kitchen, huh Joan???? You talk trash about so many people, and yet you can't take some criticism? You have just demonstrated exactly what it feels like to be attacked! Get over yourself!!

Surprised to see so many defending Joan Rivers. How hypocritical of Joan to call interviewer mean spirited! She has made a living for 50 plus years as a sarcastic, offensive "comedienne" – this notion that she did not deserve to be treated with disrespect was one of her better jokes.

The trend on the part of interviewers to pack as much presumptive allegation as possible into blatant leading questions is unfair to their subjects, and just poor journalism. (Charlie Rose is also frequently guilty of this.) I don't want hearsay testimony from the questioner, I want to hear a story from the subject - his or her version of the FACTS, not a justification for their very existence. I"LL decide who the good and bad guys are, if you don't mind.

I doubt this was a publicity stunt as very few people watch CNN. I saw this on a real news channel and was thrilled that Joan walked off the set. That wasn't an interview at all. I heard no questions being asked, rather one indictment after another. It felt uncomfortable just watching it. I think people are interested in hard-nosed investigations of serious issues...not the grilling of a comedienne who's selling a book. Cripes, I see more pertinent news in your nightly repeats of Forensic Files. And just an FYI...listening to Costello or Banfield for five minutes could lobotomize an entire audience, so you might want to post a warning during their programs.

  165. C. Cooper

Did someone forget to tell the interviewer that this was an interview about a famous comedienne's new book?
Yes, Joan's humour is cutting and has been for her successful 50 years. No one has to watch Joan on TV, or pay to see her act if they don't like her humour. As for the comments saying that Joan can dish it out but can't take it....why do they think that this was the interviewer's job? No, Fredricka's job is NOT comedy, nor to be a comedy critic. Her job was to do a respectful, intelligent interview about a new book, not to use screen time to vent her own opinions. If CNN is going to do a puff piece about a comedy book, then do it. Those people watching the interview were tuned in because they wanted to hear about Joan's book. The headlines that said "Joan storms out before interview was over" are ridiculous, as the "interview" never started. Fredricka should be ashamed, as should CNN. Both should make a public apology to Joan and to viewers...and without the self-satisfied grinning.

She is an arrogant and vane hypocrite, I never liked her style. Personally, I cannot understand why people feel it is necessary to have so much plastic surgery or any plastic surgery unless you were hurt cosmetically in an accident.
She looks so fake, like she is wearing a mask which is stiff and typically does not move when talking. We should start making more jokes about plastic surgery like in the movie "Escape from LA"

The reporter did her job. If joan Rivers can't handle it after "50 " years of show business maybe it's time to hang it up. She can make fun a tragedies , horrific deaths but when it comes to a few questions from a reporter she storms out like baby. She also has said I don't know what I did to Johnny Carson to make him walk by me in a restaurant. Are you serious Joan? The man made you, trusted you and you go behind his back for a job that competes against him and you don't know why he's upset? You are a greedy woman who will do or say anything for money. The tonight show could have been yours Joan but you were to greedy and tried to hurt a man who helped you. I was Joan Rivers biggest fan until she pulled that ( greedy )stunt. I commend Fredricka Whitfield , kudos to you.

congratulations, Fredericka! you just jumped the shark! prepare for your viewership to go down like Katie Couric after sarah palin & matt lauer after ann curry. your unprofessional behavior veiled as the naïve victim is so transparent. you are the reason why networks now have the disclaimer that the views expressed by commentators are not the views of the network. joan just put you on the map. I have seen you on the weekend but you were just a generic newsreader to me. you got off topic. joan made several attempts to get you back on topic. comedians play a character like actors. she was doing her job as a comedian. were you doing your job as an interviewer? I will now tune in to fox on the weekends. I stopped watching today after they fired ann curry and started watching gma. I stopped watching the talk after they fired leah remini and holly robinson peete. whenever I see Katie Couric, I change the channel.

Joan Rivers is the person who is mean spirited, not Fredricka. She says some of the most horrible things about people under the guise of "comedy." Once an interviewer points out that some of the things that she says might not be so nice, then suddenly she gets miffed. Some of the vicious things that she said about Fredricka in interviews afterward proves what type of person she really is. Joan, don't dish it out if you can't take it, sweetie.

I love Joan and will buy her book. Her show is Great and I agree that some stars look like crap and deserve to be called out for it. With all that money they should at least Dress Well! Joan was there to promote her book not to be bashed by Fredrica. And as for fur, I have a coat that's 25yrs old; it was a gift from my aunt who is now deceased; and I'm going to wear it! PETA needs to help the wild horses that are being killed, farm animals, so many things current. Stop focusing on coats that you can't do anything about and take care of today's problems. No kill humane society/shelters would be a Good Project for you!

I can't stand people who laugh whilst they say mean things and then pretend that they were joking, which is exactly what this interviewer was doing. Joan Rivers is too smart and too experienced not to recognize this game, and she was right not to play it. CNN, stop hiring on-air presenters just for their looks, and aim for more credibility and professionalism in your journalism.

I agree with most of the posters, I used to like 'Fred', but when you got Joan Rivers for a guest it's an entertainment segment. Yeah Joan is mean, but for comedy, in real life she's very compassionate. Just do your job Fred, when you get someone who's 'relevant' and has done wrong, – then ask the tough questions.

This Anchor is terrible at her job and you feel uncomfortable watching her. I put myself through it 3 times and the third time, I turned the sound off and just watched her facial expressions. She acts like a B___h and she seems to want to make a name for herself for being one of those interviewers that are"tough" . Oprah never pulls faces like that when she interviews someone...neither do the other famous people that do a job like hers. I'm not even a fan of Joan Rivers but now I certainly will not be a fan of this opinionated, inexperienced Fredericka, that should be called Ureeka!

Joan was attacked from the start, I expect more professionalism from a CNN reporter. The interviewer was just plain mean in her approach and it appears she was out to get Ms. Rivers. An apology is in order but I doubt Ms. Rivers will get one. So, I will say "Ms. Rivers I am sorry you were treated badly." I will also say that I am glad you stood up for yourself and walked go girl!

This Reporter is terrible!! Every coment and question she made was to put Ms. River in a bad position, what a horrible interview, I respect Joan Rivers for walking out of that mean reporter. Ms. Whitfield, I have never seen any of your work except for this interview you attempted to conduct with Joan Rivers. You are one of the only people on Earth to demonstrate, via your questions, an utter contempt toward Ms. Rivers. Your barely disguised disdain and envy for Joan matched your phony smiling expressions. You are one of the only people on Earth who is unable to appreciate what Joan Rivers did for millions of people. She made us laugh, and thereby directed our attention away from our horror and bewilderment before life's mysteries. . She did the right thing by walking off. I hope that you are smart enough that you reached out to apologize to Ms. Rivers - you certainly owe her a public apology, if you have not made one already.

I just watched this interview for the first time and was disgusted by Fredricka Whitfield. This has nothing to to with the great Joan Rivers passing away. Whitfield should have been fired on the spot. What a pathetic interviewer she is – no warmth, kindness or respect for one of the greatest Comedians of all time. What a smug, self-serving bully. Why the attack? I used to watch CNN but I don't think I will anymore because some moron that works there helped write those questions and comments. Two dumb-asses that are not helping your ratings. Shame on you CNN and Fred. I'm disgusted by what I just viewed.

I am just devastated by the untimely death of the iconic Joan Rivers and have been watching the reviews of her life and was curious about seeing this BS of an interview. I hope that Ms. Whitfield has been fired from CNN as that was nothing but a passive aggressive attack on a living legend who had earned the right and had the courage to say what other people think and yes, she liked to shock people as well as make them laugh and nobody could do it better...Joan was one of a kind and someone who worked hard to achieve her dreams. I have observed that Joan was generous to a fault and overcame so many obstacles to get where she was. Nothing was handed to her and young people today who expect fame and fortune to come overnight should take a lesson from the Mad Diva who I hope knew how loved she was and how much she will be missed. Whitfield thought she could make a name for herself but she will only be remembered as a smug bully and with great destain. I stopped watching CNN long time ago. No wonder.

It's about time someone tell these hypocrites that they are just that ... hypocrites! I'm glad Ms. Rivers was wearing a fur ensemble on her book cover. I refuse to use the term "real fur" or "faux fur" because there is no such thing as artificial fur, if it's not "real", then it's made from some man-made fiber and shouldn't even be compared to fur (more like "lining"!). Great counter-point Ms. Rivers made regarding the interviewer wearing leather shoes and I don't blame her for walking out because once Ms. Rivers determined that this person interviewing her is a fraud and fake who probably didn't care one bit about the substance of her book because of stupid questions like the one posed, she came to the conclusion that the interview wasn't going to go the way she had been told it would, so she split! Oh and this person needs to go back to acting school (since she's obviously not a journalist), because her trying to act like she was clueless frankly was insulting.

I only learned of this interview yesterday and watched it. Frederica who??? Joan Rivers did make fun of others and more importantly, herself. She was also great at self-deprecating humor and you missed that. I am grieving her loss in a way that surprises me, and watching old clips of her. She could really make me laugh. Yesterday I bought Joan's r book, which I also learned about with the interview. "Freddie" was a jerk, her smirking and tone of voice were snarky and hateful, and it makes me so much sadder that it happened towards the end of Joan's life. I thought Joan's appearance on Letterman was perfect. Why does CNN allow such hateful interviewing of someone who brings so much laughter in the world? Fire "Freddie", what a classless act. It was just unnecessary.
