Should returning Ebola workers be quarantined?

Ebola has claimed at least 49,000 lives and federal health officials say the best way to combat the virus is to send more health workers to the region.  However, strict quarantine rules may make some doctors and health officials apprehensive about jumping in to help.  Brooke Baldwin speaks with Dr. Phuoc Le about how he feels about quarantines.

While healthcare workers have done good work in Africa, they also have a responsibility for their communities here at home. We have seen that when they are well and break quarantine and then become sick they wreck havoc all around them. Every business they have visited has to be closed and fumigated and they will suffer enormous losses. Apartment buildings have to be fumigated and other tenants are disrupted. Airlines and cruise lines are thrown into chaos with other passenger's trips ruined. Tax payers foot the bill for all this. Now we have the narcissistic young lady who refuses to adhere to quarantine guidelines with a total disregard for her neighbors and friends. If she does become ill we are back into having to clean up the mess behind her. You cannot have the person who is a potential risk telling you what they will and will not do.

Parents can be fined and jailed for not vaccinating their children in this country (in the interest of full disclosure my children have been vaccinated- just making a point), for fear they could give another child chickenpox. However, we have people that believe they have the right to walk around and potentially share an extremely deadly disease with all. What?? Yes, they have done a great thing going and treating people with Ebola in Africa, but do a great thing for the people at home also. Stay at home so that you have 0% chance of coming into contact with my family. Things can happen when you least expect it. What if someone that came back from treating people in West Africa were in a car accident and no one knew they had the potential to develop Ebola and they infected hospital workers and others. Yes I know that is a remote possibility but why take the chance.

What's striking is that Dr Gupta/et al speak as though 'the science is settled' on Ebola & they know everything about it. The contradictory statements & actions by the US govt & CDC prove otherwise. US soldiers have been quarantined but healthcare workers who treated Ebola patients don't have to be?

Also, there is the self-righteous, even snotty, arrogance of these healthcare workers. It's like they are saintly people whom we are privileged to share the world with & they only have to obey the rules they choose. That Ebola stricken doctor in NYC lied about his movements until the cops caught him. That doctor at NBC broke self-quarantine to go get soup. Now this nurse is outraged & refuses to cooperate with public officials. These great healthcare professionals can't be trusted. That many in the media are portraying them as heroes is maddening.

It appears as if the govt, media, etc, regard "stigmatization" as worse than the threat of an Ebola outbreak. I disagree.

It seems to me we're actually doing pretty well on the Ebola problem in this country. Several people have been treated for it here, and only one has died. The rest have all recovered. And I'd rather trust the doctors than Chris Christie on whether Kaci Hickox should be quarantined. But I wish they could give us a clear answer on whether you can get Ebola from handling sheets that an Ebola patient has slept on.
