Australian authorities stormed a cafe where a self-styled Muslim cleric had been holding hostages, killing the gunman and ending a crisis that had paralyzed central Sydney for hours.

Gunfire erupted Tuesday at a Sydney cafe where a gunman held 17 hostages. The gunman has been identified as Man Haron Monis. He probably acted alone and does not appear to be part of a broader plot, U.S. law enforcement and intelligence sources say.
